Therapy Dogs Help Area

ST. MARYS — When Anita Barton lost a beloved horse after a summer of nursing the animal, she knew, intellectually as a school guidance counselor, that doing something out of grief is usually not the best choice.

“A lot of my friends said, ‘You do not need a puppy,’” Barton said. “But what did I do, I went and got a puppy.”

ROC Continues To Serve Community

ST. MARYS — It was a busy weekend for the Resource and Opportunity Center in St. Marys.

A 5K Saturday morning raised funds for the center, the proceeds of Christian music festival Waynestock went to the cause and on Sunday, founders Joe and Bev Hurlburt rounded out the week serving a weekly free supper. As the ROC creeps up on its first birthday Oct. 1, the founders can look back at how the center has grown into its mission of giving people the resources they need to make success for themselves.

Video Tour Planned To Promote St. Marys

ST. MARYS — In an effort to continue to market the city of St. Marys, the community will once again be highlighted in a series of videos that will appear online.

St. Marys Development Manager Susan Crotty is working with CGI Communications to produce video tour books for the city that will appear on Relocate.org, a website that provides information to those who are looking to move. The video, once completed, also will be available of the city’s website.

A 5K Race/Walk will take place at 8:30 a.m. today in front of Skip Baughman Stadium. Registration info can be found at TheROCResourceCenter.com.

St. Marys Farmers’ Market will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, next to Dave’s BBQ on Celina road, Ohio 703.

Aug. 18: A community supper will be served from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at the ROC, 702 E. Spring St., St. Marys. It is eat-in only and the meal is free.

Otterbein Preps For Fish Fry

ST. MARYS — Otterbein Senior Living kicked off its annual fish fry Thursday night with root beer floats and a performance by Don Smithey, gospel and country guitarist.

Resident Life Director Dianna Uhlenhake said every year the tent goes up Thursday and there’s an event Thursday night that makes use of the tent. The event builds excitement for Saturday’s fish fry.

“The fish fry is our biggest event of the year,” she said. “We pull out all the stops.”

Competitors Display Best Rib Recipes

ST. MARYS — The smell of ribs filled the air over SummerFest Saturday afternoon as competitors served up their best dishes as part of the annual rib cook-off.

Armed with spices, rubs, sauces, smokers and grills, each competitor sought bragging rights for the year — as well as trophies and cash prizes — for having the best ribs. The cook-off drew competitors from Lima, St. Marys and New Knoxville.

Ed Scarberry, of Lima, is a veteran of rib cook-offs.

SummerFest Opens

ST. MARYS  — The 30th annual SummerFest is open for business.

The annual event, which draws crowds to Memorial Park all weekend, kicked off on Thursday with the opening ceremony. Before proclaiming the event open, St. Marys Mayor Pat McGowan touted SummerFest as a bridge across generations of St. Marys residents who left but the city but who come home for the event each year.
