ST. MARYS — Felled trees, downed power lines and widespread power outages kept crews busy Friday night as a severe thunderstorm swept across the region — leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
“Right now we are driving around and taking assessments,” St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven said Friday night. “There’s a lot of damage — there’s homes with trees on roofs, trees on cars and limbs and branches everywhere.”
Saturday issues of The Evening Leader may be delayed tomorrow because of power issues at the printing facility in Wapakoneta.
ST. MARYS — Staff at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park are prepping for what is expected to be a busy week of camping, boating and fishing.
“Attendance has been decent, but we are expecting to have good attendance this weekend into the Fourth of July and next weekend,” Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Manager Brian Miller said. “We have a good weekend this weekend, and some of them are leaving, but we’ll have a good crowd for the Fourth and for the next weekend.”
ST. MARYS — A local marching band will soon be holding its first restaurant fundraiser.
St. Marys All-Brass Marching Band will be hosting “A Taste for Music” St. Marys Band night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 9 at Beer Barrel along Indiana Avenue to help raise funds for the band’s trip to the Citrus Bowl parade and Disney parks.
Band Parents Organization President Dan Burke explained how they came up with the idea.
ST. MARYS — Carolina Castillo has never competed in a pageant before and will be challenging herself in her first experience as she competes for the title of Miss Ohio Teen.
The Memorial High School senior said she chose to pursue the opportunity after receiving a letter in the mail noting she had been recommended. She traveled to the Lima Convention Center, where she went through a lengthy tryout.
ST. MARYS — One of the newest businesses to the St. Marys area broke ground Thursday morning.
Representatives from Superior Federal Credit Union celebrated with a groundbreaking at its site between JT’s Brew and Grill and Buffalo Wild Wings.
Superior Federal Credit Union Marketing Director Kurt Neeper kicked off the groundbreaking at the site located at 462 Fortman Drive in the Shoppes at St. Marys by welcoming those who came out for the ceremony.

NEW BREMEN — After having to remove multiple village trees last summer, New Bremen is cautioning its residents to be on the lookout for bagworms.
“Last year, we had two areas where they were really bad, one by the tennis courts by the pool and we also had them in the industrial park,” New Bremen Parks Foreman Ron Tontrup said. “Around the tennis courts, there were three arborvitae that we had to dig out and replace. They just kill the trees.”
ST. MARYS — Facing bone-dry conditions, a pair of local safety officials are cautioning residents from holding open burns until precipitation returns.
“As of last week, we were 8.5 inches below normal rainfall,” Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson told The Evening Leader. “By the end of the week, we will probably be 9.5 inches because of evaporation and moisture leaving the soil.”

NEW BREMEN — Because cartoon characters vary in shapes, sizes and colors, “Cartoon Guy” Jeff Nichols says there are no mistakes when drawing the characters.
“There’s no such thing as a mistake when you’re drawing cartoons,” Nichols said to a crowd of children gathered at the New Bremen Public Library Tuesday afternoon.
Nichols held a program at the library to demonstrate how to draw a few cartoon characters.

ST. MARYS — Appeals judges in Lima reduced the felony conviction for gross sexual imposition of Doug Wine late Monday morning.
In a ruling issued by the judges from the Third District Court of Appeals, Wine's conviction for gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony, has been reduced to a third-degree misdemeanor of sexual imposition. The case has been remanded to Auglaize County Common Pleas Court.
