February 24th
ST. MARYS — It has been an ag-filled week at St. Marys Memorial High School this week as a group of local students have been showcasing the agriculture community as part of an annual event.
This week was National FFA Week, and Memorial High School students had put on various activities to celebrate the week designated to bring light to agriculture.
“It’s fun,” FFA Student Adviser Austin Zumbroegel said. “We get to express the farming side of us.”
ST. MARYS — Members of a local school committee worked to narrow down a “wish list” of items recently submitted by district administration during a meeting on Thursday.
The members of the St. Marys Board of Education held a tour in late January, during which each of the district’s administrators noted the items on their lists.
NEW BREMEN — New Bremen High School students packed the gymnasium Thursday afternoon, all with one thing in mind — saving lives.
More than 60 students signed up to participate in the Future Farmers of America’s (FFA) annual Red Cross Blood Drive, with a goal to donate 42 units of blood. Red Cross Team Supervisor Tara Kleinhen said the drive ran smoothly and anticipated that the drive would meet the goal by the end of the day.

ST. MARYS — A group of St. Marys residents is working to bring a soldiers’ memorial to the newest St. Marys City Schools building.
Mike Makley, Buz Howard, Kathy Sampson and Mary Wilson, as part of a committee through the St. Marys Community Foundation, have been working on placing a soldiers’ memorial plaque that would be placed in the commons area at St. Marys Memorial High School.

ST. MARYS — The city of St. Marys has a new safety-service director.
St. Marys Mayor Pat McGowan confirmed to The Evening Leader this morning his intentions of hiring Jason Little to serve as the city's new safety-service director. Little, who lives in Washington Courthouse, takes over for interim Safety-Service Director Craig Moeller, who was appointed to the post when Tom Hitchcock resigned to take the same job for the city of Celina.
NEW BREMEN — An area chamber of commerce held its annual luncheon, showcasing where the chamber has been and its goals for this year, workforce development and presented awards Tuesday afternoon.
Members of the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce gathered at Faith Alliance Church in New Bremen to hear Chamber Director Scott Frey’s annual report and heard from New Bremen Economic Development Director Angela Hamberg on the West Central Ohio Workforce Development Initiative.
ST. MARYS — Zoning on recently annexed land into the city along County Road 33A will wait a little longer.
Members of the St. Marys Planning Commission Tuesday night voted to table the zoning of 32.4 acres of land that was recently annexed into the city. Board members decided to table the matter after a few adjacent property owners, who own land outside the city limits, questioned the proposed industrial zoning of one of the parcels during a public hearing before the meeting.

ST. MARYS — A local women’s group is hosting an area event for women next month.
The Auglaize-Mercer Women in Business Networking Association is hosting the Women’s Power Conference on Saturday, March 31, at Wright State University Lake Campus.
NEW BREMEN — The Future Farmers of America (FFA) have a full week of activities planned, as the New Bremen chapter of the organization is celebrating National FFA Week.
National FFA Week, which is being celebrated from Feb. 18-25 this year, gives members a chance to educate the public about agriculture, according to the FFA website. The week is celebrated annually and always includes George Washington’s birthday, a decision made by the National FFA Board of Directors in 1947, according to the website.
February 20th
ST. MARYS — A group of local high school students will be moving on in an annual science competition, as they compete at the district level next month.
Memorial High School senior Keith Frische, sophomores Courtney Steele and Alli Franklin and freshman Ben Tuttle will be heading to Ohio Northern University on March 24 in Ada after moving on from their school science fair held Feb. 8 and 9.
