Fire Hits Downtown New Bremen

February 27, 2012

NEW BREMEN — Firefighters from several local departments have arrived on the scene of a fire in downtown New Bremen. Crews were initially called to Fireside Pub for reports of smoke before 7 p.m. Monday. Officials at the scene have confirmed to The Evening Leader no one was injured as the result of the blaze and that it was contained to one building. More information will be published once it is released.

Mercer County SO Probing Home Invasion

CELINA — Law enforcement officials in Mercer County are trying to determine if a home invasion Saturday morning near Mendon is linked to a double homicide near Fort Recovery in November.

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey held a press conference Monday morning to release details of a home invasion that took place shortly after midnight on Saturday at 12617 Dutton Road, just north of Ohio 117 near Mendon. Two people were inside the residence at the time — Kathy Fair, 47, and her father William Fair, 73.

75 years ago: East Bank Road was closed to traffic because spray blowing in from Lake St. Marys froze and formed a coating across the roadway. Already 20 inches above normal highs, it rose approximately two feet in the last day.

Patriotism Flies At Contest

ST. MARYS —  More than 30 speakers decked out in patriotic garb and armed with props took to the stage Sunday afternoon as part of an annual speech contest.

The St. Marys Eagles hosted the annual St. Marys City God, Flag and Country speech contest. The event featured speeches ranging from the abolition of slavery to how to make an American pizza and included three age groups — 10 to 11-year-olds, 12 to 13-year-olds and 14 to 15-year-olds.
