December 21st
ST. MARYS — Sherry Warner had planned to do her Christmas shopping in Columbus on Friday, but the snow storm that blanketed the region changed her mind.
“I decided to shop local. I think the snow did everyone a favor,” she said.
Kohl’s associate Shelby Ruppert agreed, as heavy lines transformed the four customer service lanes, normally for returns, into checkout counters.
“This whole week has been crazy,” she said. “Tomorrow’s supposed to be awful.”
ST. MARYS — Thursday’s Christmas party at Auglaize County Council on Aging brought about 100 seniors to the St. Mary’s center to watch dancing, exchange gifts, and get pictures on Santa’s lap.
The regulars at the center, however, say it’s not the entertainment or the food, but the companionship that brings them through the door.
ST. MARYS — A winter storm that brought snow and wind into the region, snarled traffic and closed schools today.
“At about 5 a.m. today, all 15 drivers were out on the roads,” Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart told The Evening Leader this morning. “It’s a heavy snow, and fortunately that means it won’t drift as bad.”

ST. MARYS — School officials in St. Marys have canceled several events in the wake of a threat that made reference to a shooting on Wednesday.
St. Marys police officers began investigating the threat following a phone call from school administrators. The threat, which was not directed at any specific person or traceable back to any one person, included a reference to a shooting during a school assembly.

ST. MARYS — Bing Crosby may dream of a white Christmas, but Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart dreams of a safe Christmas, slightly purple and smelling of sugar beet juice.
That’s because Reinhart and a team of about 20 inclement weather workers know the dangers of driving through the snow— the team plows and applies salt and grit to the 350 miles of road their department is responsible for keeping safe about an hour before most workers are scraping their windshields and school buses hit the roads to make their stops.
ST. MARYS — For 16-year-old Luis Jordão, an exchange student at St. Marys Memorial High School, small-town America is exciting and different.
Jordão is from Racife, the largest city in Brazilian state Perambuco. The population there, approximately 1.5 million people, is over 180 times the size of St. Marys.
In August, Jordão packed up his stuff and left the coastal town with its warm beaches and oceanside restaurants to move to the United States.
December 18th
ST. MARYS — If awareness of head injuries had been as focused six years ago as it is now, parent and tennis coach Brice Brenneman says he might have worried more about the three sports concussions his son suffered while in high school.
“The first one was a routine heading in soccer,” Brenneman said. “He came home, got sick, fell asleep. The first one the doctors treated as a fluke.”
The second and third concussions were treated more seriously, however, leading doctors to recommend he wear a foam padded helmet to play sports.
ST. MARYS — The seventh and eighth grade choir and band students at St. Marys Middle School performed their annual holiday concert yesterday evening to a full house.
Guests who arrived shortly before the performance had to stand because every seat in the auditorium was filled.
Seventh-Grade Band Director Dane Newlove led the students in their first song, “Deck the Halls With Dazzling Drummers,” which, as the title suggests, was dominated by its drummers. This added life to a traditional holiday tune.
December 17th
WAPAKONETA — Dressed in full uniform, area law enforcement officers accompany children and their parents through the front door of the Wapakoneta Walmart.
Leading a group, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon comments on the smiles on their faces. He is not only talking about the children who are participating in the annual “Shop With a Cop” but he is addressing the officers with police departments, the sheriff’s office and the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
