Festival Shines In Park

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville/Washington Township Fire Department earned bragging rights for the year Saturday after beating the competition in the extrication competition at the Fireman’s Picnic.

Buckland, Chickasaw, New Bremen/German Township and New Knoxville/Washington Township fire departments went head-to-head in the annual competition, most boasting times under three minutes.

Locals Look To Flush Cancer

ST. MARYS — A local high school group is hosting a new fundraiser to go toward its cause of finding a cure for cancer.

Members of St. Marys Memorial High School's Relay for Life team is hoping to "Flush Out Cancer" with the fundraiser they kicked off Wednesday evening by placing a purple, duct-tape covered toilet in the school's assistant principal's, Brian Pohl, yard.

"The Relay kids voted who would be the first participant," MHS Relay for Life Adviser Karen Newlove said.

Deutsch Day Competition

NEW KNOXVILLE — Screams of victory, sighs of defeat and the occasional German tune filled the gym at New Knoxville Local School Friday morning, as students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades competed in the German Olympics.

German teacher Kathy McClain said the annual event is used to promote German culture.

"The idea is to promote German heritage," McClain said, noting that the event is always scheduled during German-American Week. "With New Knoxville being a German town, we try to highlight their heritage."

Cisco Talks Baseball, Hands Out Award

ST. MARYS — A local baseball legend returned to town Wednesday to hand out a Little League award that bears his name.

Galen Cisco visited members of the St. Marys Rotary Club during their weekly meeting at the St. Marys Eagles and talked about all things baseball. He also handed out the Galen Cisco Award, which is presented annually to the St. Marys Little League’s team most valuable player.

NEW KNOXVILLE — Area residents will flock to New Knoxville’s Community Park this weekend for a day full of activities at an annual fire department fundraiser.

Ceremony Set For National Guard

ST. MARYS — Approximately 90 soldiers based at the St. Marys unit of the Ohio Army National Guard will be honored at a ceremony later this month.

A Call to Duty ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 at Memorial High School to mark the deployment of St. Marys Alpha Company of the Special Troops Battalion 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The unit was called into active duty earlier this year for a yearlong deployment that will feature service in Afghanistan.

Volunteer Struck By Vehicle

CELINA — A volunteer with a local law enforcement agency was hit by a car while directing traffic at a crash location.

In a news release issued this morning, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said his office is investigating a serious injury crash that involved a member of the MCERV (Mercer County Emergency Response Volunteers) who was assisting the sheriff’s office at a crash scene.

Group Returns For Performance

ST. MARYS — A French Canadian musical group showcased their talents at a local college campus Monday night, and it will also be performing at a local senior center, as well as various other locations around the area.

For the second year in a row, Mauvais Sort is visiting this area and is holding multiple performances as part of the Ohio Arts Council’s International Music and Performing Arts in Communities Tour (IMPACT).
