ST. MARYS — Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol boat Santa Maria headed home to its base on Grand Lake after a quiet safety and training patrol. At 6 p.m., Sunday, lookout Mike McKay, of Dayton, reported a boat circling the Santa Maria at very high speed.
Damon Springer, 16, of 9676 State Route 127, Celina, died on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Wayne Hospital in Greenville.
He was born on Oct. 24, 1994, in Knox County, to James Springer of Celina and Amy (Duane) Willey of Danville, and they survive him.
He is also survived by a brother, Andrew Springer; a sister, Beth Shafer; his grandparents, Don and Dorothy Springer of Celina, James Frye of Mount Vernon and Mike and Bonnie Swingley of Howard; his great-grandparents, William and Evelina Frye of Howard.
He was preceded in death by two uncles; two cousins.
Donald H. Leffler, 82, of Celina, died at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1929, in Celina, to Howard and Opal (Lechliter) Leffler, and they preceded him in death.
He married Dorothy Sheets, and she preceded him in death. On Dec. 29, 1979, he married Carolyn Baucher, and she survives him in Celina.
MINSTER — On Tuesday, the Minster Village Councilors approved an emergency ordinance to enter into an enterprise tax agreement with Advanced Plastic Recycling/Dirksen Properties LLC.
Advanced Plastic is planning a 10,800 square foot addition to their current building on N. Garfield Street, which will cost the company between $290,000 and $320,000 to construct.
Village Administrator Don Harrod said the company has asked for a tax abatement.
ST. MARYS — Area residents looking to score a deal and to help a county agency can check out an annual garage sale that kicks off Thursday.
The Auglaize County Council on Aging is holding its annual garage sale — a fundraiser to help the agency with the multiple activities and services it offers throughout the year.
“The garage sale starts the 18th and goes through the 26th,” ACCA Activities Director Evelyn Hartley said. “Most of the items are donated by seniors from around the county.”
ST. MARYS — City councilors next week should get their first look at an ordinance that would allow the live trapping of squirrels in an effort to curb power outages across St. Marys.
Members of the St. Marys Electric Committee voiced no objection to the proposal to introduce legislation that would authorize the live trapping of squirrels within the city limits during squirrel season. Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock said the legislation is an attempt to quell squirrel-related outages — events that have surged in recent months.
ST. MARYS — A local is using biological research in an effort to help bring a solution to the algae problem in Grand Lake St. Marys.
Andrew Durkee, a St. Marys native beginning his junior year in college, is conducting research at Bowling Green State University on diatom stimulation in hopes to find a way to fix the lake.
Robert J. Bayham, 95, of 04370 Poppe Road, St. Marys, died on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at his residence.
He was born on March 14, 1916, in Dayton, the son of Frank and Flora (Hobler) Bayham, and they preceded him in death.
On Jan. 5, 1946, he married Cecilia M. Bochenek, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 3, 2008.
Marie Duerr Eichenauer, 88, of Celina, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at the Celina Manor Nursing Home.
She was born on Sept. 13, 1922, in Adrian, Mich., to Kenneth and Eva (Leonard) Sheldon, and they preceded her in death.
In 1940, she married Elwin H. Duerr Sr., and he preceded her in death on July 27, 1978. She later married Russell K. Eichenauer, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1995.
Donna Mae Bergman, 51, of 147 Hanover St., Minster, died at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, in the emergency room at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on Sept. 20, 1960, in Coldwater, to Ralph and Mary Ann (Riethman) Wenning, and her father preceded her in death. Her mother survives her in Maria Stein.
On July 31, 1982, at St. John Church in Maria Stein, she married Vernon W. Bergman, and he survives her.
She is also survived by her six siblings; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law.
