ST. MARYS — Bicyclists from all over will be descending on the area this weekend as the local lake becomes a race course.
Grand Lake St. Marys will be the site of a Colavita Zipp Time Trial Series race this Sunday, as bicyclists will embark on a trek around the lake.
"This is our second race at the lake," Organizer Roger Bowersock said. "Our first was in 2010."
The Greenville resident said last year's race was an enjoyable one for the participants.
Rita J. Diller, 79, of Coldwater, died on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
She was born on May 3, 1932, in St. Marys, to Edward and Rose (Hemmelgarn) Ruther, and they preceded her in death.
On May 29, 1954, in St. Marys, she married Donald J. Diller, and he preceded her in death on May 1, 2001.
Rita is survived by three children, Kenneth Diller of Indianapolis, Ind., Christine (James) Grilliot of Bremen and Cathy (Tony) Puthoff of Philothea; three grandchildren; three sisters.
Karl E. Allmandinger, 78, of Troy, formerly of Celina, died at 7:38 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at his residence.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1933, in Mercer County, to Karl M. and Chloa E. (Smith) Allmandinger, and they preceded him in death.
On June 1, 1952, he marred Helen M. Howell, and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2006.
ST. MARYS — A husband and wife involved in a motorcycle crash on Wednesday remain in Lima hospital.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jerry W. Mullins, 49, and Regina Mullins, 44, both of St. Marys, were on board a motorcycle and traveling west on Ohio 219, near Montezuma, when a vehicle driven by Terri L. D'Andrea, 46, attempted to make a left turn into a private drive and collided with the Mullins' motorcycle.
Mary M. Axe, 89, of St. Marys, died on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
Mary was born on Jan. 15, 1922, in St. Marys, to August “Gus” and Nettie Mae (Bower) Schaffer.
On Dec. 24, 1945, in St. Marys, she married Richard “Red” Axe, and he preceded her in death in 1978.
WAPAKONETA — For Ali Murr, showing her animals in the Junior Fair Beef Breeding and Feeder Calf Show at the Auglaize County Fair is in the family.
Murr, 16, of Waynesfield, showed several cattle Wednesday afternoon in the Junior Fair competition. She has been showing cattle for 11 years, and said she got involved in 4-H after watching her older sister.
“My sister showed here (at the Auglaize County Fair),” she said. “She’s out of 4-H now, since she’s 21.”
WAPAKONETA — A Wapakoneta FFA and Fryburg Happy Farmers members completed a rare feat Thursday by capturing a showmanship Triple Crown.
Kaylee Fisher, who won the Dairy Market Steer and the Beef Market Steer showmanships, earned the title of Showman of Showmen in the Showmanship Sweepstakes Thursday in the Show Barn.
As she stood with her fellow competitors in front of the announcer’s table before they announced the Showman of Showmen, Kaylee replayed in her mind herself showing all the animals.
WAPAKONETA — Area students showed off their hogs during Wednesday morning’s Junior Fair Market Hog Show at the Auglaize County Fair.
Participants led their hogs around the swine arena as they were judged on their size and coat.
“They want really big muscles in the pigs and a big loin — the line down their back,” Wes Hirschfeld said after showing a gilt. “They want a very full look.”
The St. Marys student said this is his 11th year in 4-H, and he started out as a Cloverbud.
WAPAKONETA — Joint Township District Memorial Hospital was presented with a $30,000 check from The Dannon Company Monday night at the Auglaize County Fair to fund the Grand Health Family Challenge.
The $30,000 grant was awarded as part of the Dannon Next Generation Nutrition Grant program, which strives to combat childhood obesity. Dannon Manager of Corporate Responsibility Gayle Binney said the program was initiated in 2006 to help children who were struggling with being overweight or obese.
