Jeanne D. Ballenger, 86, of St. Marys, died on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community.
She was born on Feb. 22, 1925, in Akron, the daughter of Charles “Pop” and Pauline (Junkins) Cain, and they preceded her in death.
On July 21, 1946, she married Richard Ballenger, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 2001.

ST. MARYS — Ashley Rickard enjoys challenging herself, and one of her most recent challenges has been inside a chain-linked cage.
The St. Marys Memorial High School graduate has been training for cage fighting for more than a year now at Sudden Impact in Fort Wayne, and also does jiu-jitsu and kickboxing. Rickard said she was drawn to the sport because of the competition.
ST. MARYS — One of the newest additions to K.C. Geiger Park recently welcomed its 7,300th visitor.
“It’s exceeded our expectations,” St. Marys Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock said about the miniature golf course in K.C. Geiger Park. “As of yesterday (Wednesday) we had 7,319 people go through. We’ve even had 2,000 go through on the honor system out there.”
Lee R. Deerhake, 76, of 10703 State Route 29, New Knoxville, died on Monday Aug. 29, 2011, at Stein Hospice Center in Sandusky.
He was born on March 11, 1935, in New Knoxville, to LeRoy and Laura (Vordermark) Deerhake, and they preceded him in death.
Debbie Sue Baker, 54, of Wapakoneta, died on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born on March 5, 1957, in Lima, the daughter of Roger and Carol (Verhoff) Baker. Her mother survives in Wapakoneta, and her father preceded her in death.
ST. MARYS — The Evening Leader will be hosting an online college football pick'em contest through its website TheEveningLeader.com.
Local contestants will be able to take on our panel of four local experts — Josh Goff, Brian Smith, Denny Lauth and Mike Burkholder — in an effort to win weekly prizes. The top pickers of the season will receive cash prizes as well.
ST. MARYS — Local residents who want to own a piece of St. Marys history can do so by visiting the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce.
A version of the 1936 film that was found in the chamber’s basement in 2009 has been digitized and transfered into DVD format for purchase. Minster Bank donated the funds to help cover the costs of digitizing and restoring the film.
ST. MARYS — Area students received an annual visit to their schools where they were presented with a tool that will help them throughout this year and maybe in future years.
The St. Marys Rotary Club presented dictionaries to third-grade students at Grand Lake Christian School, at Holy Rosary School and at St. Marys Intermediate School Wednesday morning.
“We know third grade is a very big year,” Rotarian and Dictionary Chair Jim Harris told the students at St. Marys Intermediate School. “We want to help you out during the year.”
