Riders jump out early, but Kenton prevails

KENTON — For 22 of the 24 minutes of Friday night’s first half, there were glimpses of St. Marys regaining its confidence on the Western Buckeye League stage against the league’s recent gold standard.

A defensive stop, an interception, and a perfect lob pass for a touchdown gave St. Marys a lead. And down just one point midway through the second quarter,  St. Marys had a chance to take the lead going into the half with the ball inside the Wildcat five yard line.

Minster roars past Lehman, goes to 2-0

SIDNEY — In a rematch of last year’s division VI regional final, Minster defeated Lehman Catholic 41-13 at Sidney Memorial Stadium on Friday night.  

The Wildcats now head into next Saturday night’s  showdown against defending conference champion Delphos St. John’s with a 2-0 record.

Fort Loramie blanks New Bremen

FT. LORAMIE — New Bremen’s gameplan found roadblocks when three of its running backs went down to injury on Friday night against a tough Fort Loramie defense.

For Fort Loramie it was open highway in a Route 66 battle.

With a pair of touchdowns in the first half and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter allowed the Ft. Loramie Redskins to beat the Cardinals 34-0.

“They are a good football team,” New Bremen head coach Rob Messick said. “They just outmatched us physically up front and we just have to get better.”

Flyers, Riders To Team Up

ST. MARYS — A university and local school band are teaming up to provide a performance at the school’s first official home football game for the 2011 season.

The Pride of Dayton, the University of Dayton’s marching band, will be coming to St. Marys Sept. 9 to perform when St. Marys takes on Elida at Skip Baughman Stadium. This is the first time UD’s band has performed with the St. Marys All Brass Band, SMABB Director Dane Newlove said.

Author Pens Vol. 2 Of Book

ST. MARYS — A local author and columnist recently released the second volume in his five-part series collection.

The Evening Leader Columnist John Andreoni released volume two of his series “Going Wild With Forda Birds.” The series encompasses a collection of Andreoni’s outdoor columns, which he started writing more than 40 years ago. Each column included in the collection is preceded by Andreoni’s present thoughts on the issue addressed.

Canal Work Moves On

MINSTER — A project along the Miami and Erie Canal should help improve the waterway for years to come.

Auglaize County Design Engineer Matt Quinter noted construction crews are approximately 70 percent done with phase one of a two-phased ditch petition project along the Miami and Erie Canal in Minster. The project will improve the waterway from First Street to Ohio 119 through the village.

Walter N. Miley, 82

September 2, 2011

Walter N. Miley, 82, of 208 Parkway Drive, St. Marys, died on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at his residence.

He was born on March 10, 1929, in Wapakoneta, to Harry S. and Florence (Koehl) Miley, and they preceded him in death.

On Sept. 29, 1951, he married Rita M. Axe, and she survives him at the residence.

Edward Meyer, 94

September 2, 2011

Edward Meyer, 94, of North Star, died on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Briarwood Village.

He was born on April 26, 1917, in Willowdell, to Joseph and Rosa (Koester) Meyer, and they preceded him in death. 

On Oct. 23, 1946, he married Margaret B. DeLoye, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 30, 1999. 

Jeanne D. Ballenger, 86

September 2, 2011

Jeanne D. Ballenger, 86, of St. Marys, died on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1925, in Akron, the daughter of Charles “Pop” and Pauline (Junkins) Cain, and they preceded her in death.

On July 21, 1946, she married Richard Ballenger, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 2001.
