ST. MARYS — St. Marys City Councilors Monday night gave the OK to start the first phase in eradicating a furry nuisance found across the city.
A handful of residents from Beech, Weston and Vine streets appeared at the city council meeting to discuss a recent infestation of fall webworms. The insect, whose nests can be found throughout the city, are concentrated in the area around Weston Woods.
“I am infested with webworms,” Patty Mabry, of 428 S. Vine St., told city councilors. “I have millions of them.”
ST. MARYS — Kohls will be holding a job fair for its new store in St. Marys. Hours are: 10:45 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Monday, 12:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at the American Legion, 2880 Celina Road, St. Marys.
ST. MARYS — In what pageant organizers called a “tight” competition, Brooke Slife was crowned the 2011 Miss SummerFest Queen Sunday evening at the annual summer pageant.
The eight contestants in the Miss SummerFest Queen Pageant were judged and given scores on an essay, a personal interview, an introduction, causal wear, a talent, evening gown and an on-stage interview. The contestant with the highest overall score was crowned Miss SummerFest.
ST. MARYS — A storm system that blew through the region Sunday downed trees, power lines and a garage.
Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said the powerful storm packed winds of up to 48 mph and moved through the city shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday. The winds knocked down several trees throughout the city, including one that fell onto a garage and knocked down power lines.
ST. MARYS — Parades, softball tournaments and music will take over St. Marys this week as an annual summer festival returns.
The 2011 edition of SummerFest will once again feature a wide slate of activities, bands, food and fellowship in Memorial Park.
The event, organized by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, takes over the park at 6:45 p.m. Thursday with the opening ceremony followed by Supper and Sounds in the Park.
From there, the rest of the weekend is packed with something for everyone.
ST. MARYS — A new, local nonprofit organization is hoping to help make a difference in the lives of others through scholarships and funding medical research.
The Hirschfeld Foundation Inc. was founded by cousins Jamie Heitbrink and Jennifer Gaston in memory of family members who passed away.
ST. MARYS — Bicyclists from all over will be descending on the area this weekend as the local lake becomes a race course.
Grand Lake St. Marys will be the site of a Colavita Zipp Time Trial Series race this Sunday, as bicyclists will embark on a trek around the lake.
"This is our second race at the lake," Organizer Roger Bowersock said. "Our first was in 2010."
The Greenville resident said last year's race was an enjoyable one for the participants.
Rita J. Diller, 79, of Coldwater, died on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
She was born on May 3, 1932, in St. Marys, to Edward and Rose (Hemmelgarn) Ruther, and they preceded her in death.
On May 29, 1954, in St. Marys, she married Donald J. Diller, and he preceded her in death on May 1, 2001.
Rita is survived by three children, Kenneth Diller of Indianapolis, Ind., Christine (James) Grilliot of Bremen and Cathy (Tony) Puthoff of Philothea; three grandchildren; three sisters.
Karl E. Allmandinger, 78, of Troy, formerly of Celina, died at 7:38 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at his residence.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1933, in Mercer County, to Karl M. and Chloa E. (Smith) Allmandinger, and they preceded him in death.
On June 1, 1952, he marred Helen M. Howell, and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2006.
ST. MARYS — A husband and wife involved in a motorcycle crash on Wednesday remain in Lima hospital.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jerry W. Mullins, 49, and Regina Mullins, 44, both of St. Marys, were on board a motorcycle and traveling west on Ohio 219, near Montezuma, when a vehicle driven by Terri L. D'Andrea, 46, attempted to make a left turn into a private drive and collided with the Mullins' motorcycle.
