Jurors Still Deliberating

October 28, 2011

WAPAKONETA — After close to eight hours of deliberations, jurors in the rape trial of Douglas Wine were sent home Thursday night. They are scheduled to return to court at 9 a.m. Friday to resume their deliberations.

Janice Elaine Seibert, 74

October 27, 2011

Janice “Janet” Elaine Seibert, 74, of 106 N. Main St., Mendon, died at 9:37 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at her residence.

She was born on Aug. 9, 1937, in St. Marys, to William and Golda (Goodwin) Rupert, and they preceded her in death.

She married Larry Seibert, and he preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Pam Lawson of Mendon; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; three sisters; three brothers.

PI, Detective Testify At Trial

WAPAKONETA — During an interview with a private investigator, a St. Marys optometrist said he believed the case against him stemmed from mistaken identity.

Jurors in the rape trial of Douglas Wine, 52, viewed portions of an interview taped by Brad Kelly, a private investigator hired by Wine and his wife following allegations of unconsented sexual conduct with a 69-year-old woman in 2009. During the interview, Wine said he did not recall the incident but said if he did, he thought it was his wife.

Defense States Its Case

WAPAKONETA — The defense laid out its case on Wednesday, with a handful of witnesses testifying on behalf of a St. Marys optometrist charged with rape.

Clarinda Wine, Douglas Wine’s wife, testified about the events surrounding Oct. 12 and 13, 2009.  She told Ritchey Hollenbaugh, Wine’s attorney, that she did not notice anything unusual the next morning when the woman left to return home to Florida. She said when she woke up, Wine was in bed with her.

Committee Seeks New Tennis Court Plans

ST. MARYS — After holding a meeting Wednesday evening, a local school official will be requesting new architectural plans regarding tennis courts.

The St. Marys Board of Education’s Building and Grounds Committee met to discuss options about the district’s tennis courts during a meeting Tuesday at the district offices.

CELINA — St. Marys’ Kelly Heitkamp bent a 35-yard rainbow from the right wing just over the reach of the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms with 35:42 left in the second half with what proved to be the game winner in a 1-0 Division II district semifinal win at Celina on Wednesday night.

St. Marys ends season at home against Shawnee

Through all the highs of record-setting rushing nights and a redemptive win over Celina to the lows of disappointing second halves against Kenton, Defiance , Wapak and O-G — St. Marys has a chance to improve its record by four games over last season and get to the .500 mark to end the season it hosts Shawnee at Skip Baughman Stadium on Friday night.

“This is important for us, to close this out,” St. Marys head coach Greg Phillips said.

Donald D. Barnes, 82

Donald D. “Barney” Barnes, 82, of St. Marys, formerly of Spencerville, died at 8:50 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.

He was born on July 14, 1929, in Auglaize County, the son of Alfred and Mabel (Greymyre) Barnes, and they preceded him in death.  

On Oct. 27, 1973, he married Hazel Elrod, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1996.
