Shoppers Head Out For Black Friday

ST. MARYS — Area businesses opened their doors early this morning to crowds of deal-seekers eager to make a dent in their holiday shopping lists.

“We’ve been very steady,” Kohl’s Assistant Manager Julia Dornick said. “The customers have been friendly, and we’ve been doing well.”

Dornick said the store, which opened at midnight, opened its doors to a slew of customers.

Irma A. Wendeln, 76

Irma A. Wendeln, 76, of 1776 St. Johns Road, Maria Stein, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster, where she had been a patient for seven weeks.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1935, in Minster, to John and Mary (Dwenger) Sturwold, and they preceded her in death.

On Jan. 21, 1956, she married Charles U. Wendeln, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 2009.

Viola L. Thuman, 98

Viola L. Thuman, 98, of Wapakoneta, died at 3:09 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at Auglaize Acres. 

Arrangements are being completed at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

Edward W. Schulte, 84

November 25, 2011

Edward W. Schulte, 84, of Celina, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1927, in Celina, to Frank and Rosa (Zumbrink) Schulte, and they preceded him in death.

On Feb. 7, 1953, he married Waneta Michaels, and she survives him.

Delmar D. Hartley, 81

Delmar D. Hartley, 81, of St. Marys, died at 6:27 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at his residence.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1930, in Moore County, Texas, to Clell A. and Ruth M. (Wollen) Hartley, and they preceded him in death.

He is survived by a son, Edgar Hartley of New York, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by a brother; a sister.

Delmar served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. 

Rosemary T. Menker, 76

November 25, 2011

Rosemary T. Menker, 76, St. Marys, died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at Otterbein Retirement Center, St. Marys. 

She was born on May 9, 1935, in Fort Loramie, to William and Theresa (Sherman) Albers, and they preceded her in death. 

On July 2, 1955, she married Norman U. Menker, and he survives at Otterbein.

Charles M. Hay, 92

November 25, 2011

Charles M. “Bud” Hay, 92, of 205 N. Jefferson St., New Bremen, died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011,  at the Elmwood of New Bremen.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1919, in St. Marys, the son of Charles I. and Matty Marie (Schlechty) Hay, and they preceded him in death.

On Oct. 19, 1946, he married Louise Moeller, and she preceded him in death on March 30, 2008.  

Jane Goodwin, 66

November 25, 2011

Jane Goodwin, 66, of 127 S. Wayne St., St. Marys, died suddenly on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at her residence.

She was born on May 10, 1945, in St. Marys, the daughter of Orville and Helen (Schelby) Miars, and her father preceded her in death. Her mother survives her in St. Marys.

Tri Star Students Hold Meal To Help Others

ST. MARYS — Students from the Mercer and Auglaize county area took time out of their school day to serve an early Thanksgiving meal as part of an annual fundraiser.

The students at the Tri Star Dennings Building in St. Marys prepared and served an early Thanksgiving dinner for their peers, administrators and others during the annual event on Wednesday.

Center Holds Shoe Collection

ST. MARYS — A local organization is working to raise money through collecting used shoes.

The Family Life Center of Auglaize County is hosting the Barney the Shoeman Program, in conjunction with the Hands Across the Sea Foundation, through Nov. 30. The program "gives your old shoes a second chance, and makes shoes affordable to those who otherwise must go bare-foot," according to the Hands Across the Sea Foundation's website.
