John Milton Buterbaugh, 84

December 6, 2011

John Milton Buterbaugh, 84, of 6761 Debra Ave., Celina, died at 3:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at the Laurels of Shane Hill in Rockford.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1927, in Hagerstown, Md., to John N. and Corrine (Reightler) Buterbaugh, and they preceded him in death.

On. Feb. 23, 1952, he married Joy Tyson, and she survives him in Celina.

He is also survived by his children, Gary (Deb) Buterbaugh of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Lori (Michael) Prude of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jill Cherni of Celina; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister.

Darrel M. Smith, 81

December 6, 2011

Darrel M. Smith, 81, of Celina, died at 2:07 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at the Laurels of Shane Hill in Rockford.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1930, in Mercer County, to Cleveland Smith and Elizabeth Dumbald, and they preceded him in death.

On Sept. 26, 1953, he married Ruth L. Boroff, and she survives him.

He is also survived by a son, Gregory (Carol) Smith of Celina; a granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War.

School to Start BYOT Program

ST. MARYS — Local students will be participating in a pilot project through their school, as early as the beginning of next year.

A group of students in grades eight through 12 will be participating in the BYOT — or Bring Your Own Technology — program, through which students will bring their own technological devices to class.

The program, Technology Coordinator Kyle Menchhofer said, comes at a time when the district has been making cuts, with technology being one of the many being hit.

Santa Shindig

ST. MARYS — Electronics, dolls and a pony topped the lists of desires for area children who wrote letters to Santa Monday night at the St. Marys Community Public Library.

The library held its annual open house, featuring a slew of holiday-themed activities, including a visit with Santa, storytime with Mrs. Claus and the opportunity to write a letter to Santa among others.

“A phone,” Tayla Meeker, 7, said of what she is hoping Santa will bring her this year as she completed her letter.

ST. MARYS — The Auglaize County Sheriff's Office has released information stating River Road is closed between SR 65 and Greeley Chapel Road because of high water, as well asTownline Lima Road between Buckland Holden and Fairmount.

Santa Arrives

ST. MARYS — A steady rain on Sunday could not dampen the spirits of local children as Santa Claus made his annual appearance in Memorial Park.

While the rain forced the postponement of Winterfest, dozens of children  trickled into Santa’s house to visit with him after his long trek from the North Pole. Each entered and told Santa what he or she wanted for Christmas.

“It’s sparse because of the rain but they are coming in,” Santa told The Evening Leader. “We’ll talk to the kids while they are here today.”

Locals Bleed For Others

WAPAKONETA — Local residents and businesses have been recognized for outstanding achievements and volunteer service to a nationwide organization.

The Indiana-Ohio Region of American Red Cross Blood Services recently hosted its annual recognition luncheon, and one of the recipients has hit a milestone — by donating 24 gallons of blood in her lifetime.

Group Seeks Manager

CELINA — A local lake restoration group is now looking to find a new face for its efforts to help heal Grand Lake St. Marys.

Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration Commission Facilitator Tom Knapke told members of the Lake Improvement Association during their monthly meeting on Saturday he received the green light to begin accepting applications for a lake manager. The position would be responsible for overseeing projects regarding the restoration of the lake.

Caleb Williams, a Mount Vernon Nazarene sophomore and New Bremen grad, scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Cougars in a 75-67 loss to Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, on Saturday.
