Carl W. Schlenker Sr., 92

January 16, 2012

Carl W. Schlenker Sr., 92, died on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at The Gardens of Wapakoneta.  

He was born on May 16, 1919, in Wapakoneta, to John and Elizabeth (Ochs) Schlenker, and they preceded him in death.

On June 22, 1940, he married Mildred (Mid) Cook, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 1992.

Patti A. Hullinger, 51

Patti A. Hullinger, 51, of 909 Tecumseh Drive, St. Marys, died at 4:17 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

She was born on Nov. 2, 1960, in Hammond, Ind., to Ralph and Colleen (Popyk) Rodgers, and they preceded her in death.

On Dec. 27, 1987, in Loveland, Colo., she married Timothy A. Hullinger, and he survives.

Joseph L. Sarfi, 94

Joseph L. Sarfi, 94, of 1020 Fleck Ave., Celina, died on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1917, in Cleveland, to Joszef and Mari (Stefarak) Sarfi, and they preceded him in death.

On April 21, 1943, he married Harriet F. Dudek, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 2005.

He is survived by a son, Glenn R. (Santosh) Sarfi of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Valerie Strohl of Celina and Gayle (Gerry) Simon of Kent; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a nephew; a great nephew; a great-great niece and nephew.

Gladys A. Fledderjohann, 90

Gladys A. Fledderjohann, 90, of 11168 Plattner Pike, New Knoxville, died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012.
Funeral arrangements are being completed with Vornholt-Miller Funeral Home in New Knoxville.

District Tackles Sexting

ST. MARYS — In the wake of a group of local students being charged with unruliness by sexting, school officials are noting they have discussed the topic at school, and they believe it’s a topic parents should talk about with their children at home.

Two St. Marys Middle School 12-year-olds, a male and a female, were recently charged with unruliness by sexting, and in a separate case, a 17-year-old St. Marys male and a 14-year-old female at St. Marys Middle School were charged with the same thing.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Minster keeps rolling with win over Parkway

MINSTER — Make it four in a row.

Minster's mid-season turnaround kept going with a fourth straight win to go above .500 just two weeks after starting the season 1-4.

Minster defeated Parkway 48-34 in a Midwest Athletic Conference match-up on Friday night.

“It was a game that was a low-scoring, pretty much defensive struggle, and not a whole lot of flow to the game, which you except in league action,” said Minster head coach Mike Lee, who was pleased with his team’s defensive effort throughout the game.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Bath runs away from Riders with big 4th quarter

BATH TOWNSHIP — It was possible to pinpoint the exact second when things fell apart for the St. Marys Roughriders on Friday night at Bath.

J.D. Meyer’s late third-quarter exit with four fouls was the fracture point. Without him on the floor, a spirited Western Buckeye League match-up with the Wildcats turned one-sided.

A tied game turned into a double-digit lead for the Wildcats as Meyer sat on the bench and Bath ran away with a 63-51 Western Buckeye League win on Friday night.

BOYS BASKETBALL: New Bremen's defense leads to 50-42 win over New Knoxville

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Bremen Cardinals were able to stay one step ahead of New Knoxville the whole night to defeat the Rangers 50-42 Friday in a MAC Contest at New Knoxville.

“We just stayed in front of people on defense,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “We stayed in our gap and followed our rules and if we would have done that all night it might have been a different kind of game.

E-books Land at St. Marys Library

ST. MARYS  —  Kindles, Nooks and tablets topped the wish list of many area residents this holiday season, and a local library is offering a slew of items for these devices at no cost to library patrons.

The St. Marys Community Public Library offers a variety of e-books, audiobooks and movies that may be checked out for use on a variety of devices, including Kindles, Nooks and Sony Readers. E-books may also be checked out for use on a Windows or Mac computer. A complete list of supported devices can be found on the library’s digital catalog website.

Village Nets Path Funding

NEW BREMEN — Area residents in wheelchairs, bicyclists or those who need scooters to get around will soon be able to get out and explore a resource in the area.

As part of a Transportation Enhancement grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation received through a partnership with the village of New Bremen and the New Bremen Foundation, a portion of the Miami and Erie Canal Towpath Trail will be paved.
