Village Examines Finances

NEW BREMEN — An area village took a look at its finances during a special meeting this weekend.

New Bremen Village Councilors met on Saturday morning to discuss capital projects to go ahead with this year.

To begin, Village Administrator Wayne York noted the village ended up spending approximately $400,000 more on capital projects in 2011 than it planned.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Van Wert too much for Roughriders

VAN WERT — Van Wert turned in a strong defensive performance over the final three quarters and  used an offensive outburst in the second quarter keyed by a bench player’s breakout night for a 68-43 win over St. Marys on Friday night.

“I just thought our attention to the little things got better and we were able to capitalize when we made them uncomfortable,” Van Wert head coach Dave Froelich said.

Offensively for the Cougars, a bench player was the catalyst.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Parkway stuns New Bremen for second win of season

ROCKFORD — A lay-up by Parkway’s Derek Luth with 25 seconds left proved to be the difference in the Panthers’ stunning win over New Bremen on Friday night.

Parkway picked up only its second win of the season with a 52-51 victory over the Cardinals.

“They were tougher than us,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “That was the difference. They were tougher and competed harder and they wanted it more and we took it. It was that way the entire night. No matter what it was it was like that the entire night.”

BOYS BASKETBALL: St. Henry pulls past Minster in second half

MINSTER — A big second half lifted St. Henry to a 51-42 victory over fellow Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Minster on Friday night’s Senior Night.

“For as well as we started out the game — we had pretty good ball movement and ball reversal and so forth against their zones, which we addressed the entire week — we just did a rotten job once they switched defenses and that unfortunately carried over into the second half, and they basically just slowed us to a crawl,” said Minster head coach Mike Lee.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Versailles holds off New Knoxville

VERSAILLES — New Knoxville’s 26-point fourth quarter made things interesting, but ninth-ranked Versailles held on for a 69-63 win over the Rangers on Friday night at Versailles High School.

New Knoxville senior Lucas Leffel scored a game-high 26 points. Jake Allen added 16 points and Andrew Arnett had 11 points for New Knoxville.

Chad Winner scored a team-high 23 points for Versailles while Kyle Ahrens added 19 points.

Dredge To Arrive

ST. MARYS — The local state park will be receiving a new piece of equipment next month.

Grand Lake St. Marys State Park is on schedule to receive a new dredge next month — despite shipment delays, “Brutus” is scheduled to arrive soon.

“It should be here mid-March,” Regional Dredge Supervisor Tom Grabow said.

Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Manager Brian Miller noted they have been working out some “bugs” with the equipment.

New Booster Club Formed

NEW BREMEN — A new group has formed with a goal to support New Bremen’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter.

The newly formed Ag Boosters Club is a nonprofit group with goals to support the New Bremen FFA students, whether through financial assistance or through networking opportunities. FFA Adviser Katy McGovern said the Ag Boosters formed after she was contacted by a few residents with an interest.

Agencies Team Up For Drill

ST. MARYS — Local school and county officials gathered at Memorial High School in St. Marys Friday morning to practice their responses in the event of an emergency.

The Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) held a tabletop exercise for first responders and school officials centered around a scenario of a vehicle crash into a substation along U.S. 33, near the high school. Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson ran the various officials through a set of scenarios in real time and assessed their responses.

S. Andrew Liming, 57, of St. Marys, was found dead on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at his residence.
Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.

Ruth Eleanore Holtzhauer Rohrbach, 88

February 17, 2012

Ruth Eleanore Holtzhauer Rohrbach, 88, joined other family members and friends at 4:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2012.
She was the daughter of Joseph and Olvina (Hoagland) Holtzhauer, and they preceded her in death.
On May 11, 1946, she married Norman Rohrbach, whom she continued to love throughout her life, and he preceded her in death.
