ST. MARYS — Boaters taking to local waterways are encouraged to keep safety on their minds, a local watercraft officer says.
As warm weather sets in, State Watercraft Officer Kevin Peters said boaters should inspect their vessels before hitting the water. Boaters also should have several safety items handy before setting out.
ST. MARYS — The smell of pancakes, syrup and sausage filled the air of the American Legion as part of a service group’s semiannual fundraiser.
The St. Marys Kiwanis Club held its first pancake day of the year on Saturday as members served up pancakes and sausage to hungry visitors. For the club, the breakfasts serve as a major fundraiser.
Ronnie Joe Craft Sr., 55, of 10526 Mercer–Auglaize County Line Road, St. Marys, died at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, in the emergency department at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1956, in Dayton, to Talmadge and Imogene (Elam) Craft, and his mother and stepfather, Imogene (Thomas) Campbell survive in St. Marys.
He is survived by a son, Ronnie Joe Craft Jr. of Miamisburg; a brother; a sister; three nieces and nephews.
Mary E. Tumbusch, 81, of 511 E. Washington St., St. Henry, died on Friday, April 20, 2012, at Briarwood Village in Coldwater.
She was born on Aug. 2, 1930, in Philothea, to Albert and Julia (Homan) Boeckman, and they preceded her in death.
On May 22, 1954, in Philothea, she married Ralph H. Tumbusch, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 2004.
Trae A. Harter, 26, of Celina, died at 3:53 a.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Mercer Health.
He was born on May 9, 1985, in Coldwater, to Dan Harter and Connie Cook Hines, and his father survives in Celina. His mother and stepfather, Dale Cook, survive in Celina.
He is also survived by a son, Linus Greyson Harter of Celina; a brother, Derrick (Anrdea) Harter of Celina; his grandmother, Rita Harter of St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Duff and Joann Tester and Raymond Harter.
He was employed at Accu-Tech in Coldwater.
Dennis G. Ward, 63, of 18390 Moulton-Fort Amanda Road, Wapakoneta, died at 8:22 a.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.
He was born on June, 15, 1948, in Celina, the son of Charles and Alice (Cotterman) Ward, and they preceded him in death.
On Dec. 17, 1966, he married Kathy L. Dunlap, and she survives at the residence.
CELINA — The St. Marys baseball team saved its biggest hits for the last two innings as the Roughriders came back to defeat the Celina Bulldogs 5-3 in eight innings at Montgomery Field in Celina.
St. Marys (11-5, 5-1) will now travel to Sidney today for a doubleheader and entertain Defiance in a WBL contest on Tuesday, while Celina (8-8, 1-4) will entertain Paulding today.
Throughout the entire game the Riders threatened but couldn’t get that big hit for a run and it came down to their final at bat before they could come through to tie the game.
Celina’s five-run second inning broke things open in the Bulldogs’ 12-2 five-inning win over St. Marys.
Celina scored a run in the first and then five runs in the second.
The rout was on after Celina scored four more in the third. Leah Rose’s three-run home run that got just over the glove of the left fielder with two outs and two on pushed Celina’s lead to 10-0.
Back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the fourth made it 12-0.
The Celina boys tennis team won two of the three singles matches while splitting the doubles matches to edge St. Marys in a Western Buckeye League match on Friday evening.
Celina earned a three-set win from Aaron Seibel at second singles over the Riders’ Cole Brooks, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in the night’s most closely-contested match-up.
Celina’s Jeremy Walls won third singles over the Riders’ Jason Freewalt, 6-1, 6-0.
WAPAKONETA — Moving forward with improved security as part of courthouse renovations, the Auglaize County commissioners have purchased equipment necessary for those updates.
This week the commissioners approved the purchase of a scanner and magnatometer to place at the single entry point to the Auglaize County Courthouse once renovations are complete.
“It wasn’t part of our original bid package but it’s always been budgeted for the project,” Commissioner Doug Spencer said of the purchase.
