Choir, Band Earn High Marks

ST. MARYS — Local musicians recently received top honors during a competition held earlier this month and will soon be advancing to the state level.

The Memorial High School Symphonic Band, Symphonic Choir and Concert Choir received superior ratings at the Ohio Music Education Large Group Adjudicated Event held March 16 and 17 in Celina.

The competition, Band Director Dane Newlove said, is done annually but this was a first for the groups.

Bunny Trail Saturday

ST. MARYS —  The St. Marys Community Partnership will be hosting the 2012 Bunny Trail Saturday.

The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will offer treats to participants as well as a chance to win the big basket. Children must be accompanied by an adult with his or her own transportation. There is no admission, but canned goods will be collected for Agape Food Pantry. Also, be sure to bring a good-sized basket.

Legion Honors Pair

ST. MARYS — A local veterans organization honored two residents who give their time and energy to help make St. Marys a better place to live.

St. Marys American Legion Post 323 honored Chris Wilson and Connie Triplett as its firefighter and teacher of the year during a meeting Wednesday night at the legion hall. Wilson, a member of the St. Marys Fire Department, has been a full-time firefighter for 10 years.

Program Offers App Advice

ST. MARYS — Tablets, smartphones and apps were the center of discussion at this year’s Business Person’s Breakfast Thursday morning at the St. Marys Community Public Library, as Verizon Wireless Advanced Solutions Architect Steve Johnston informed area businesspeople about the latest technology and how it can benefit businesses.

Johnston noted the results of the Gartner Report, which showed the rising popularity of smartphones and tablets.

Riders Jump For Others

ST. MARYS — For the past few days, local elementary students have been raising money for a national organization and engaging in a little friendly competition.

Students in Sue Grothause’s physical education classes at St. Marys Intermediate School have collected donations the past few weeks and this week have had jump roping competitions starting Monday as part of Jump Rope for Heart.

“As a total, we’ve raised $3,140,” Grothause said. “Everything goes to the American Heart Association.”

MHS Alum Shares Love Of Literature

ST. MARYS — At as young as 5-years-old, Gabriel Rieger was already tackling the literature of Edgar Allan Poe as a way to spend time with his father.

Robert H. Vantilburg, 74

April 5, 2012

Robert H. Vantilburg, 74, of Celina died on Monday, April 2, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on April 23, 1937,  in Celina, to Kenneth and Waunita (Woods) Vantilburg, and they preceded him in death.

On April 11, 1959, he married Rosemarie Schwinn, and she survives.

He is also survived by three sons, Harry (Margie), Robert (Julie) and Terry Vantilburg, all of Celina; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany.

Clifford B. Ball, 92

Clifford B. Ball, 92, of 510 W. 300 North, Portland, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born on May 2, 1919, in Ellenboro, W.Va., the son of Hugh and Ada (Riggs) Ball, and they preceded him in death.

He married Lena DeChessro, and she preceded him in death in 1966.  On April 16, 1967, he married Nancy Houser, and she survives.

Lucille Josephine Fleck, 88

Lucille Josephine Fleck, 88, of Celina, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1924, in Philothea, to Joseph and Theresa (Stahl) Pleiman, and they preceded her in death.

On Nov. 10, 1951, she married Richard H. Fleck, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1974.

McGaharan to be named New Bremen head football coach

NEW BREMEN — Jason McGaharan will be introduced as the next head football coach at New Bremen High School next week.

McGaharan, an assistant coach at Sidney High School, will be announced as the varsity football coach Wednesday, April 11 at a 6 p.m. press conference in the school's auditorium, New Bremen athletic director Gary Jones said yesterday in a release.

McGaharan served as offensive coordinator for the Yellow Jackets last season under head coach Adam Doenges and previously under Dan Cairns.
