MHS Alum Shares Love Of Literature

ST. MARYS — At as young as 5-years-old, Gabriel Rieger was already tackling the literature of Edgar Allan Poe as a way to spend time with his father.

Robert H. Vantilburg, 74

April 5, 2012

Robert H. Vantilburg, 74, of Celina died on Monday, April 2, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on April 23, 1937,  in Celina, to Kenneth and Waunita (Woods) Vantilburg, and they preceded him in death.

On April 11, 1959, he married Rosemarie Schwinn, and she survives.

He is also survived by three sons, Harry (Margie), Robert (Julie) and Terry Vantilburg, all of Celina; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany.

Clifford B. Ball, 92

Clifford B. Ball, 92, of 510 W. 300 North, Portland, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born on May 2, 1919, in Ellenboro, W.Va., the son of Hugh and Ada (Riggs) Ball, and they preceded him in death.

He married Lena DeChessro, and she preceded him in death in 1966.  On April 16, 1967, he married Nancy Houser, and she survives.

Lucille Josephine Fleck, 88

Lucille Josephine Fleck, 88, of Celina, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1924, in Philothea, to Joseph and Theresa (Stahl) Pleiman, and they preceded her in death.

On Nov. 10, 1951, she married Richard H. Fleck, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1974.

McGaharan to be named New Bremen head football coach

NEW BREMEN — Jason McGaharan will be introduced as the next head football coach at New Bremen High School next week.

McGaharan, an assistant coach at Sidney High School, will be announced as the varsity football coach Wednesday, April 11 at a 6 p.m. press conference in the school's auditorium, New Bremen athletic director Gary Jones said yesterday in a release.

McGaharan served as offensive coordinator for the Yellow Jackets last season under head coach Adam Doenges and previously under Dan Cairns.

Fleagle wins third national title, breaks second national record at YMCA Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Josh Fleagle of St. Marys won his third YMCA short-course national title and broke a second record time of the week on Wednesday.

Fleagle, a home -schooled student,  won the men’s 100-yard freestyle crown with a record-setting 43.41-second time.

On Tuesday, Fleagle won the 200-yard freestyle title with a 1:37.91 time.

Fleagle set a national record on Monday in the men’s 50-yard freestyle with a 20.19-second time.

Councilors OK New Hire

MINSTER — Minster Village Councilors approved the hiring of Andy Kuenning as the newest member of the Minster-Jackson Township Fire Department during their meeting Tuesday night.

“We have interviewed him a couple times showing him how we operate and he is very anxious to come on board,” Minster Fire Chief Dale Dues said. “We think he will be a good fit and he will bring us to 34 firefighters now and we are looking to fill two more spots in the next year or so.”

Kuenning Nets Honor

NEW BREMEN — Area business professionals met for a luncheon Tuesday afternoon to recognize one of their own.

During the New Bremen Community Improvement Corporation’s annual luncheon, Stan Kuenning received the CIC’s 2012 Excellence in Business award.

CIC President Chris Fyock presented the award to Kuenning, who started what is now Western Ohio True Value Hardware.

For the second time in two weeks the Roughriders downed the Cougars, emerging with a 5-3 win on Tuesday night at K.C. Geiger Park in the one that will count towards the WBL standings.

St. Marys' Nick Vogel came out of the bullpen to replace Rider starter Tyler Roby. Vogel threw five shutout innings to earn the victory for the Roughriders.  He retired the side in order in the twice and struck out five.
