75 years ago: The state of Ohio placed a $10 per head bounty on the scalps of wolves. The measure was put in place to protect livestock herds.

Two properties along West South Street, owned by the Community Welfare Association, were razed as the parcels were deemed eyesores and in disrepair.

Geraldine Miller

Geraldine Miller, longtime St. Marys resident, current resident of Malibu, Calif., passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 15, 2012, in Santa Monica, Calif., of pulmonary disease.

She was born in Spencerville, to Amy and Gerald Koening, and they preceded her in death.

In 1951, she married William Miller of St. Marys.

Donald G. McName Sr., 82

Donald G. McName Sr., 82, of Lima, formerly of Buckland, died at 9:27 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Koester Pavilion in Troy.

He was born on April 6, 1929, in Buckland, the son of Walter E. and Ruth (Flarida) McName, and they preceded him in death.

DECA Students Shine

ST. MARYS — A group of high school students have the opportunity to head to Salt Lake City for the national portion of their competition after winning in Ohio.

There were 27 members of the St. Marys Memorial High School DECA — or Distributive Education Clubs of America — team who competed at the Ohio DECA Career Development Conference March 16-18 in Columbus.

Entities To Offer Drug Take-Back

ST. MARYS — Joint Township District Memorial Hospital and the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office are teaming up to provide area residents with a safe way to dispose of unused, expired and unwanted prescription drugs.

Jack Clinton Willeke, 40

March 30, 2012

Jack Clinton Willeke, 40, of St. Marys, died on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born on Feb. 29, 1972, in Bellefontaine, to Wayne E. Willeke and Lillian Mary (Thaxton) Willeke, and his father preceded him in death. His mother survives him in Bellefontaine.

On Dec. 30, 2000, in New Bremen, he married Kendra Grimm, and she survives.

Dorothy M. Hittepole

Dorothy M. Hittepole, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at her residence.

She was born in Botkins, to Joseph and Clara (Freistuhler) Werling, and they preceded her in death.  

On Feb. 17, 1947, she married Chester E. Hittepole Sr., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 2011.

She is survived by two children, Chester E. Hittepole Jr. and Sharon Shoup, both of Wapakoneta; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother; a sister.

Norma Jean Pottorf Whetstone, 88

Norma Jean Pottorf Whetstone, 88, of Sidney, passed away at 10:38 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012.

Born on March 26, 1924, in Piqua, Norma Jean was a daughter of Alonzo and Pearl (West) Moyer, and they preceded her in death.

She married Robert Pottorf, and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1980. In 1983, she then married Eldon Whetstone, and he preceded her in death on March 5, 2001.

Robert E. Bender, 49

Robert E. Bender, 49, of Shreve, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at his residence after a two-year, very strong battle with a rare cancer and most recently kidney failure.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1962, in St. Marys, to Robert Lee and Claudia (Goldenetz) Bender, and his father preceded him in death in 1999. His mother survives him in St. Marys.

In June 1983, he married Christine Unkel Bender, and she survives him in Shreve.

He is also survived by his two daughters, Alyssa Bender (Mike) Eikleberry and Teresa Bender, both of Shreve.

Fleagle heads to YMCA Nationals

Josh Fleagle, a homeschool student from rural St. Marys who has swam YMCA, club and now USA Swimming, will compete at the YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina, next week, where he will be competing in seven events over just a few days.

Fleagle will defend his 100 meter freestyle national title  along with swimming in six other events packed into the week.

On April 2-5, Fleagle will swim in four individual events and three relay events with teammates  and local swimmers Jared Fleagle, Jared Deubler, Matt Feltz, Matt Hollman and Peyton Jones.
