Rangers Honored For Art

NEW KNOXVILLE — Two New Knoxville Local School seniors were recently honored for their art pieces that were selected to be in the top 300 in the state.

City Seeks CDBG Grant

ST. MARYS — The removal of two vacant homes and new playground equipment are being proposed as part of a grant program for next year.

The two structures — located at 502 Indiana Ave. and 215 S. Vine St. — are owned by the city. St. Marys Engineering Superintendent Craig Moeller said the project will be included in a grant application as part of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

BASEBALL: Riders can't hold lead against Coldwater

COLDWATER  — Coldwater head baseball coach Brian Harlamert trotted towards the dugout after his post-game speech and implored someone in the press box to turn off the scoreboard at Veteran’s Field.

Harlamert likely wanted to pull the plug on evidence of  his team’s eight errors and being outhit before the scoreboard changed its mind about which team actually won.

BASEBALL: NEW KNOXVILLE 6, ANNA 4

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville baseball team scored in each of the first five innings of the game in a 6-4 win over Anna on Thursday night.

Jake Allen and Spencer Wolf each went 3-for-4 at the plate for New Knoxville. Adam Howe was 2-for-2. Wes Meyer went 2-for-3.

Howe started the game and earned the win on the mound. Jake Allen came on in relief for the save.

Superintendent Hired

ST. MARYS — St. Marys will have a new superintendent, as board members approved the hiring of Shawn Brown during their meeting Wednesday evening.

Members of the St. Marys Board of Education approved Brown, a principal with Spencerville schools, to a three-year contract effective Aug. 1 through July 31, 2015. Brown said he has been in education for approximately 20 years.

“I started at Lima City Schools, I taught in the middle school,” he said. “I got promoted to assistant principal there I think after about six years of teaching.”

Parks Sees Flurry Of Activity

ST. MARYS — Warmer than average temperatures to start the year have resulted in a flurry of activity at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park.

“We’re seeing a fair amount of campers right now,” Grand Lake St. Marys Park Manager Brian Miller told The Evening Leader. “We had that earlier warm spell, earlier than we have had before, but the last few weekends have been slow with the cooler temperatures and rain.”

During Easter weekend, campers packed the park. Miller said the influx of campers was a surprise.

Crews Honored

ST. MARYS — Local firefighters, police officers and transporters were invited to participate in an appreciation breakfast Tuesday morning.

St. Marys Living Center held a volunteer breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday, opening its doors to treat local volunteers to food.

“This is our volunteer and first-responders breakfast,” St. Marys Living Center Director Lorraine Fischio said. “We hold it to celebrate National Volunteer Week and to pay respects to our first-response team in the area.”

Students Pinned At Ceremony

ST. MARYS — To Tri Star Career Compact Med Prep Instructor Janet Nelson, the class of 2012 is a group of 15 butterflies ready to spread their wings.

“I met them two years ago, and they were in the larva stage — they were caterpillars,” Nelson said Tuesday night at the Med Prep Pinning Ceremony. “Caterpillars have one job — to eat. These guys came to me hungry. You were hungry to learn about medicine.”

The next stage, she said, is the chrysalis stage, or the cocoon.

Mary Louise Stienecker, 77, of St. Marys, died on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at St. Marys Living Center.
