NEW KNOXVILLE — Fourth through seventh graders learned about healthy eating, sleep and exercise from Joint Township District Memorial Hospital representative Joanne Winget Wednesday during a school health fair program.
Winget helped students plan a day of healthy eating.
“What do you’d think you’d want for a healthy breakfast?” she asked, teaching the students that bacon should be counted as a fat serving along with the butter on toast.
ST. MARYS — The closest most Americans get to Australia is Keith Urban, kangaroos, and a steakhouse named for the Outback. It is rarely described in history books or featured on the nightly news.
St. Marys residents Jay and Dee Fledderjohann, however, have not only been to Australia, some of their dearest friends are from the land down under.
Yvonne and John Moore, of Melbourne, have been staying with the Fledderjohann’s for the last 10 days. How the couples met is kind of a funny story.
NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville village council heard the results of an electric rate study Wednesday that showed an 8 percent overall difference between what the city is collecting and the overall costs of providing electric.
The study, presented by John Courtney of Courtney and Associates, suggested a $1.91 increase on the flat rate for residential customers inside city limits, plus an approximate 1 cent increase on the cost per kwh, all through 2014 to 2016.
The organizers of St. Marys’ youth football programs say a league change and reorganization will assure every boy in St. Marys will have the opportunity to play football, no longer held back by weight or roster restrictions that previously kept about a dozen kids off the field each fall.
ST. MARYS — The current Miss Ohio, Elissa McCracken, spoke to residents, played piano and was the celebrity bingo caller at Golden Living Valley in St. Marys Tuesday to honor National Nursing Home week.
“It’s really a way just to give back. This year for me, as Miss Ohio, has been all about service. If I can bring a smile to their face by visiting and listening to their story, then absolutely. Everyone should do it...it’s important to take the time to do that.”
NEW BREMEN — New Bremen Council hired two part-time police officers Tuesday, Shawn Harrod and Douglas Ranly under suspension of the rules to get the officers working by May 20, when their help will be needed for security at The Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure in June.
According to Police Chief Mike Skinner, Harrod was born and raised in New Bremen, and is the son of a retired part-time police officer, as well as the nephew of former chief Doug Harrod.
Ranly, who is from St. Henry, currently serves as a St. Henry police officer.

“We’re here tonight to discuss the cuts that will need to be made due to the failure of the levy last week,” President Lisa Tobin said.
The board first went into an executive session to consider personnel matters.

MINSTER — Adam Niemeyer has another gear to kick into for the postseason.
The Minster senior pitched his first high school no-hitter and struck out 18 Marion Local batters in an overpowering performance as the state’s top-ranked Wildcats beat the Flyers 4-0 in a Division IV sectional title game on Wednesday.
A season after he was limited in his pitching during the tournament because of arm issues, the Ohio State signee returned to tournament action on the mound with a gem.
LIMA — The St. Marys girls track team received two third-place finishes on the first day of the Western Buckeye League championship meet at Bath Stadium on Wednesday.
The St. Marys girls 3200 meter relay team of Kristen Dammeyer, Lexi Grothause, Tarin Tischler and Amanda Dues finished third with a 10:03.91 time.
St. Marys’ Mariah Heffner finished third in the girls discus throw with a throw of 114 feet, eight inches.
