BASEBALL: Riders win 18th game, New Bremen beat Spencerville

FORT RECOVERY — The St. Marys boys baseball team clinched the most wins for a Roughrider baseball team in a season in 10 years with a 9-1 win at Fort Recovery on Thursday.

The Riders’ Nick Vogel went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and six runs batted in. He also started the game on the mound and earned the win.

Codie Deaton finished the game in relief.

D.J. Manning went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Adam Neal went 2-for-4 wiht a double and a run batted in, Michael Huber finished the game 2-for-4.

SOFTBALL: Riders go out with a win, Minster holds off Marion Local

ST. MARYS — Senior Harle Smith of the St. Marys softball team sent the Riders out with a bang Thursday evening. Smith was 3 for 3 with a walk. She had two two-run doubles and a grand slam and she scored twice as the Riders defeated the Spencerville Bearcats 15-5 in five innings.

The Riders had three seniors on the team. Kiley Schamp, Harle Smith and Hannah Wurmer all contributed for the Riders this season.

Spencerville got the scoring underway with three runs in the first inning.

Fred R. Sipes, 68

Fred R. Sipes, 68, of St. Marys, died at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on July 15, 1943, in Lima, to Ray Robert and Hilda Mabel (Virtue) Sipes, and they preceded him in death.

On Aug. 14, 1969, he married June E. Whitesell, and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Chris (Melissa) Sipes of Neptune and Ian Sipes of Neptune; a daughter, Gina (Jeremiah) Schaeffer of Dixon, Mo.; a brother; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Dale L. Watercutter, 66

Dale L. Watercutter, 66, of 16 N. Cleveland St., Minster, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at his home of natural causes.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1946, in Minster, to Albert and Leona (Hartings) Watercutter, and they preceded him in death.

He is survived by a sister and brother; two sisters-in-law; nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

He was a veteran of the Army National Guard.

Billy O. “Bill” Eley, 85

Billy O. “Bill” Eley, 85, of Haines City, Fla., formerly of Spencerville, died at 3:14 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Winterhaven Hospital in Florida, following a six-year kidney ailment.

He was born on July 26, 1926, in Lima, to Edgar C. and Naomi E. Hasting Eley, and they preceded him in death.

On June 28, 1952, he married Phyllis Ann Faurot, and she survives in Florida.

He is also survived by a daughter, Kayleen (Bev) Vance of Columbus; a granddaughter; a grandson; a great-grandson; two sisters; a sister-in-law.

Cynthia S. “Cindy” Warnecke, 53

Cynthia S. “Cindy” Warnecke, 53, of Knox, Ind., formerly of Spencerville, died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, Ind., following a battle with leukemia since October 2011.

She was born on April 23, 1959, in Lima, to Hubert E. “Herb” and Janice R. Burnfield Warnecke, and her father preceded her in death. Her mother survives in Spencerville.

Riders Set For Performance

ST. MARYS — In the town of Salem, Mass., in 1692, there was a community dedicated to the service of God.

The background is of “The Crucible,” a play based on a time during the Salem Witch Trials that is also described as an allegory of McCarthyism.

Tonight and Saturday night, local students will be showcasing their version of the story they are required to read in their junior English classes in a performance of which they have been working on for approximately 12 weeks.

Cards Show Off Talents

NEW BREMEN — From singing and dancing to playing instruments and performing magic tricks, New Bremen elementary and middle school students showed off their skills Thursday afternoon for the third annual Believe in Yourself Talent Show.

“We’re extremely pleased with the number of students who signed up to share their talents with us,” Middle School Principal Howard Overman said to a packed gym before introducing the first act.

DIV. II BASEBALL: Shawnee rallies past St. Marys for sectional title

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — An early lead got away from the St. Marys baseball team in slow motion — just like the cotton candy pitches of Shawnee reliever Kyle Miller entering and disappearing from the hitting zone.

Shawnee chipped away at St. Marys’ lead one run at a time while the Roughriders couldn’t figure out a way to add insurance runs against the soft-tossing of Miller.

It meant a quick tournament exit for a Roughrider team that won 17 games this season.

DIV. IV BASEBALL: Minster get no-hitter from Knapke, Bremen bows out

MINSTER —  Austin Knapke is no ordinary number three in a rotation.

Minster's senior starter got the ball with injuries afflicting the Wildcats' top two starters and tossed a five-inning no-hitter in Minster's 10-0 win over Fort Recovery in a Division IV sectional title game.
