Scholarship Remembers MHS Student

ST. MARYS — A local entrepreneur, known for his lemonade stands and custom lawnmower, is being remembered with a scholarship fund in his name that will be available to Memorial High School students.

The family of Dylan Everage and the St. Marys Community Foundation have teamed up to create the Dylan Everage Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of the Memorial High School freshman who passed away earlier this year. Dylan’s mother, Cara Everage, said school was something that was important to Dylan.

75 Years: Firecrackers Cause Injury

"Leader Look Back" is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week's edition examines stories from July 3-9, 1937, 1962 and 1987.

75 years ago: Two St. Marys boys suffered injuries to their hands when firecrackers exploded while in their possession. The fuses were too short.

The New Bremen Post Office advanced from a third to a second class rating because postal receipts increased to the appropriate level.

Canadian thistles proved to be a menace to Auglaize County farmers.

SMCS Opens Bids

ST. MARYS — A local school district opened bids for its snow removal contract Friday afternoon.

St. Marys City Schools opened the two bids the district received, with both companies submitting bids for the contract being from St. Marys.

The apparent low bidder was HDL Property Services, with a bid of $789, followed by Whitney Paving and Sandblasting, who submitted a bid of $947.

Attorney Seeks Acquittal

ST. MARYS — The attorney for Douglas Wine filed a motion on Thursday asking judges from the Third District Court of Appeals in Lima to order a judgment of acquittal in his case.

ACME Baseball: Minster earns district berth, St. Marys bows out

MINSTER —  Minster’s Devon Poeppelman threw a complete game against St. Marys for the second time in four days and the Minster ACME baseball team assured itself of a trip to the district tournament next week with a 6-1 victory over the Roughriders on Thursday night.

Beating The Heat

NEW BREMEN — With temperatures holding in the 90s in recent weeks, area residents have flocked to the community pool to cool down.

“We’ve been extremely busy,” New Bremen Community Pool Manager Molly Burnell told The Evening Leader. “We’ve had lots of families with the holidays and lots of out of town people.”

Burnell noted she saw an influx in visitors after the storm that hit the region last week.

GLSCL Baseball: Homers lift Locos over Mariners, 5-3

LIMA — The Lima Locos homered twice in a 5-3 win over the Grand Lake Mariners at Simmons Field on Thursday night.

Greg Brodzinski and T.J. Losby each homered and drove in two runs for the Locos.

A pair of area grads contributed for the Mariners, who fell to 6-15 on the season.

Trevor Kill, a St. Marys Memorial grad and Southeast Missouri State pitcher, worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Mariners in the seventh inning.

Volunteers Pitch In

ST. MARYS — As residents continue to clean up from last week’s storm, volunteers from a statewide organization arrived in Auglaize County to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Members of Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief traveled around the St. Marys area on Thursday assisting elderly residents with debris removal from last week’s storm. The group’s chainsaw division helped clear limbs and other debris as part of a program in conjunction with the Auglaize County Council on Aging.

Norma J. Purpus, 85

July 5, 2012

Norma J. Purpus, 85, of North Garfield Street, Minster, died at 6:11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at her residence.

She was born on Dec. 11, 1926, in Minster, to Julius and Nora (Ritter) Woehrmyer, and they preceded her in death.

On April 12, 1947, at St. Augustine Church in Minster, she married Theodore “Ted” Purpus, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 2007.  

She is survived by her children, Nancy (Tim) Jay, Don Purpus and Jay (Renee) Purpus, all of Minster; nine grandchildren; her adopted family; a brother-in-law.  

Lisa A. Braun, 47

Lisa A. Braun, 47, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 6:40 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.

She was born on March 8, 1965, in Lima, to Ralph I. and Carolyn K. Cogsweel Reed. Her father and stepmother, Marge, survive in Lima. Her mother survives in Elida, and her stepfather, Jerry Smith, preceded her in death.

On Dec. 25, 1991, she married Garry A. Braun, and he survives her in Wapakoneta.
