Students Take Historical Walk

ST. MARYS — From the many modes of transportation, including the canal, St. Marys River and the interurban to the many businesses and entertainment establishments, seven classes of local third-grade students had a hands-on experience Thursday morning with the history of their hometown.

St. Marys Intermediate School and Holy Rosary School third-grade students had their fourth annual walking tour through downtown St. Marys, giving the students a visual of what they had been talking about in class.

Donald P. Meyer, 43

Donald P. Meyer, 43, of 6750 Luella St., Newport, died on Thursday, May 17, 2012, as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1968, in St. Marys, to Adolph “Sonny” and Joan (Utz) Meyer, who both survive in Newport. On May 26, 1990, he married Tammy Larger at St. Michael Catholic Church, Fort Loramie. She survives in Newport.

He is also survived by son and a daughter, Bradley and Rachel, both at home.

Barbara A. Egbert, 74

Barbara A. Egbert, 74, of New Bremen, died on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 12:05 a.m. at her residence.

She was born on May 13, 1938, in Minster. She was the daughter of Steven and Ruby (Mackley) Oldiges. On May 25, 1957, she married Alvin Egbert, who died on Sept. 16, 2003.

Catherine Marcella Heil-Grundish, 93

Catherine Marcella Heil-Grundish, 93, formerly of 05724 Auglaize Co. Road 33-A, in St. Marys, died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Golden Living Center-Valley in St. Marys.

She was born on Nov. 8, 1918, in New Bremen, to Clarence and Catherine (Frenzer) Heil. On Feb. 22, 1941, she married Clair C. Grundish, who died on Feb. 3,1974.

OHSAA members say no to competitive balance proposal again

COLUMBUS (AP) — For the second consecutive year, Ohio high schools voted down a proposal that would have addressed the ongoing competitive-balance problems between public and private teams.

An OHSAA bylaw that would have changed how schools are assigned to tournament divisions in the team sports of football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball was voted down 339-301. The results of the vote were announced on Wednesday afternoon.

A similar proposal failed by a 332-303 vote a year ago.

BASEBALL: Minster holds off Spencerville to advance to district title game

MINSTER — The Minster baseball took the adage 'survive and advance' to its uncomfortable limit, but the Wildcats will play for a second straight district title on Friday night.

Minster came back from an early deficit and weathered a nerve-wracking final inning to advance in the Division IV district tournament with a 4-2 win over Spencerville on Wednesday at Coldwater.

SOFTBALL: Minster rolls into district final

WAPAKONETA — The dream season for the Minster softball team continued on course Wednesday as they hit the ball and defeated the Lima Perry Commodores8-3 in the Division IV district Semi-final tournament held at Wapakoneta High School.

The Wildcats (22-6) will come back on Friday to face MAC foe St. Henry in the District championship game at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to regional competition at Tipp City.

The St. Marys doubles team of Troy Newlove and Cole Brooks bowed out of the Division II district tennis meet on Wednesdsay.

Brooks and Newlove won their opening match against St. Marys Central Catholic's Alex Opfer and Tanner Roth, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.

The Riders then faced Maumee Valley Country Day's top-seeded team of Grand McPherson and Stephen Shin. MVCD topped St. Marys, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the semifinals.

NEW BREMEN — Fans in attendance of the Cincinnati Reds game against the Washington Nationals on Friday were greeted with a different announcement before the national anthem.

“Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we ask that you please remove your caps, place your right hand over your heart and face the American flag,” the announcer told fans at the game.

ST. MARYS — Local third-grade students have been learning about bald eagles and butterflies, and on Wednesday, they had a visitor who told them about both topics.

Jill Bowers, who is an eagle nest monitor for the Ohio Division of Wildlife, visited third-grade students at St. Marys Intermediate School.
