LIMA — The Lima Locos homered twice in a 5-3 win over the Grand Lake Mariners at Simmons Field on Thursday night.
Greg Brodzinski and T.J. Losby each homered and drove in two runs for the Locos.
A pair of area grads contributed for the Mariners, who fell to 6-15 on the season.
Trevor Kill, a St. Marys Memorial grad and Southeast Missouri State pitcher, worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Mariners in the seventh inning.
ST. MARYS — As residents continue to clean up from last week’s storm, volunteers from a statewide organization arrived in Auglaize County to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Members of Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief traveled around the St. Marys area on Thursday assisting elderly residents with debris removal from last week’s storm. The group’s chainsaw division helped clear limbs and other debris as part of a program in conjunction with the Auglaize County Council on Aging.
Norma J. Purpus, 85, of North Garfield Street, Minster, died at 6:11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at her residence.
She was born on Dec. 11, 1926, in Minster, to Julius and Nora (Ritter) Woehrmyer, and they preceded her in death.
On April 12, 1947, at St. Augustine Church in Minster, she married Theodore “Ted” Purpus, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 2007.
She is survived by her children, Nancy (Tim) Jay, Don Purpus and Jay (Renee) Purpus, all of Minster; nine grandchildren; her adopted family; a brother-in-law.
Lisa A. Braun, 47, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 6:40 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
She was born on March 8, 1965, in Lima, to Ralph I. and Carolyn K. Cogsweel Reed. Her father and stepmother, Marge, survive in Lima. Her mother survives in Elida, and her stepfather, Jerry Smith, preceded her in death.
On Dec. 25, 1991, she married Garry A. Braun, and he survives her in Wapakoneta.
Don Hellwarth, 77, of Marysville, formerly of St. Marys, died on Monday evening, July 2, 2012, at his residence following a brief illness, with his children by his side.
Don was born on Feb. 17, 1935, near Celina, to Richard and Melva Ferguson Hellwarth, and they preceded him in death.
On Sept. 3, 1955, in Mendon, he married the former Alice Jeanette Thomas, and she preceded him in death on June 28, 2003.
Charles C. Bernholt, 77, of Celina, died at 3:45 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2012, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
He was born on Aug. 3, 1934, in Sidney, to Charles Bernholt Sr. and Mildred Gariety, and they preceded him in death.
On Feb. 23, 1963, he married Wanda Stoner, and she survives him.
Nancy L. Bailey, 72, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Wapakoneta Manor, where she had resided for six years.
She was born on Sept. 27, 1939, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Harold J. and Ruth E. McClintock Seitz, and they preceded her in death.
On July 21, 1962, she married Marion F. Bailey, and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2004.
She is survived by a son, John F. Bailey of Wapakoneta; a grandson, Gavin Michael Bailey of Wapakoneta.
Geary L. Wessel, 76, of 324 Greenville Road, St. Marys, died on Monday, July 2, 2012, at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 24, 1936, in St. Marys, the son of Earl “Heinie” and Alfred (Quellhorst) Wessel, and his mother preceded him in death on May 3. His father also preceded him in death.
He married the love of his life, Betty Knapp, on Dec. 29, 1955, and she preceded him in death on July 5, 2002.
ST. MARYS — Area women can relax, rejuvenate and enjoy fellowship as part of an annual women’s retreat next weekend.
The fourth annual Chocolate Boutique Women’s Retreat will run July 13 and 14 at Wayne Street United Methodist Church.
“Kim Kill, the chairperson, had been attending the Women of Faith event every year,” Committee member Bev Hurlburt said, noting Women of Faith is a large women’s retreat that tours across the country. “She had a desire to bring something like that to St. Marys.”
ST. MARYS — Residents and boaters near Otterbein will soon have to be on the look out for sunken lines as part of an annual dredge program at Grand Lake St. Marys.
“We will be moving our dredge from the service area to Otterbein next week,” Regional Dredge Supervisor Tom Grabow told The Evening Leader. “I’ll have 7,000 feet of line that will stretch from Otterbein to Rustic Haven. We are looking to keep that within the 300-foot offshore no wake zone.”
