ST. MARYS — Local students recently took a jab at stock trading in their government class.

Seniors in Michael Jay’s American government classes participated in Jay’s annual “Stock Market Game.”

ST. MARYS —  The state released the results on Thursday of tests taken earlier this week at  Grand Lake St. Marys, with the numbers coming in at the lowest so far.

"Ecstacy," Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration Commission Manager Milt Miller said of his first reaction to hearing the results. "Like most lakes or any vacation resort type of area, Memorial Day kicks off the season, and so these numbers were extremely welcomed news — to tell people that our lake is very much open, to welcome them back."

Students Compete at Nationals

ST. MARYS — A group of local students recently competed at the national level of their business program.

Five St. Marys Memorial High School students — seniors Cierra Anderson, Mitch Fowler, Ryan Wilker, Taylor Grant and junior Adam Neal — went to Salt Lake City, Utah, to participate in the DECA International Career Development Conference.

The DECA — or Distributive Education Clubs of America — students had qualified after competing at the Ohio DECA Career Development Conference in mid-March.

Owen Noland, 88

Owen “Buzz” Noland, 88, of 11190 Schroeder Road, St. Marys, died at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on March 1, 1924 in West Irvin, Ky., to Frank and Mary (Hall) Noland, and they preceded him in death.

On Dec. 27, 1986, in St. Marys, he married Shirley J. Harleman, and she survives.

Mary Carolyn McKinley, 93

May 25, 2012

Mary Carolyn McKinley, 93, formerly of rural Spencerville, died at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at the Hill View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Platte City, Mo.

She was born on Jan 2, 1919, in Logan Township, to Philip and Effie Peterson Grassley, and they preceded her in death.

On June 26, 1937, she married William Olin “Bill” McKinley, and he preceded her in death on July 30, 1989.

The defending state champions rallied back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and defeated South Charleston Southeastern 6-3 in a Division IV regional semifinal.

TRACK: Kinkley, Rider 4x800 girls relay team run at Lexington

LEXINGTON — The St. Marys girls track team competed in two events at the Division II regional track meet at Lexington on Thursday night.

St. Marys sophomore Erin Kinkley took 12th in the girls high jump competition. Kinkley cleared four feet, 10 inches.

Kinkley reached the regional tournament after capturing the district title at Fostoria last week.

The St. Marys girls 4-by-800 meter relay team of Sara Lininger, Kristen Dammeyer, Marissa Schrolucke and Lexi Grothause finished 16th in the finals with a 10:45.02 time.

TRACK: Minster's Collins, boys 3200 meter relay team win regional titles

TROY — Minster senior long jumper Derek Collins and the boys distance relay team won regional titles while pole vaulter A.J. Huelsman and the girls 3200 meter relay team punched their tickets for Columbus for the Wildcats on the first day of the Division III regional track and field meet at Troy Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.

Collins captured the regional long jump title when he cleared 21 feet, 4.5 inches on his final jump. Collins edged New Lebanon Dixie’s Ryan Jordan, who had a jump of 21 feet, 4.25 inches.
