St. Marys at Defiance
Both St. Marys (0-5, 0-4 WBL) and Defiance (1-4, 1-3 WBL) open the second half of the season looking to salvage campaigns that started off roughly in the first five games.
Defiance is 1-4, with its lone win coming against Bath in Week 2. The Bulldogs’ defense is the biggest culprit for the struggles. Defiance is giving up a league-worst 43.6 points per game and 495 yards of offense per game. Defiance gives up 7.9 yards per carry and have surrendered 18 rushing touchdowns.
OTTAWA — St. Marys sophomore Carter Bowman shot a 79 at the Division II sectional at Country Acres to advance to the district tournament on a rainy Thursday.
Van Wert won the sectional title with a 325 team score. The other district qualifiers were Napoleon (321) and Bryan (335). The St. Marys Roughriders finished fifth and shot a 348 as a team. Along with Bowman’s 79, Cobain Applegate shot an 83, Colin Burke shot an 84, Kyle Kiefer had a 92 and Matt Severt shot a 100.
Algar S. Moeller, 78, of Coldwater, died on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at the Gardens at St. Henry.
He was born on Dec. 31, 1933, in New Weston, to Daniel and Henrietta (Stammen) Moeller, and they preceded him in death.
On July 21, 1954, in Osgood, he married Velma (Grieshop), and she survives in Coldwater.
CELINA — With an estimate of more than 5,000 unsolved homicides in the state of Ohio, Attorney General Mike DeWine is working to help local law enforcement solve more cases by creating a centralized database for unsolved homicides.
50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
Fifty years ago this week, the McBroom Junior High eighth grade football team opened their 1962 gridiron season with a disappointing loss to the Celina Bulldogs.
Celina scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half, and despite St. Marys’ defense tightening up the rest of the way, the Roughriders were unable to overcome their deficit and fell by the 14-point decision.
St. Marys 4, Wapak 0: With a key Western Buckeye League match against Ottawa-Glandorf on next week’s horizon, the Roughriders earned a shutout in their fourth straight WBL match and beat rival Wapakoneta 4-0 on Tuesday at the West School soccer field.
After missing so many chances to score and coming up empty against Celina last week in a scoreless tie, St. Marys found the back of the net four times against their rivals to the East.
ST. MARYS — Spectators who attend games at the gymnasium in Memorial High School will soon see a new, 80-inch video board showing ads from local and regional advertisers.
NEW BREMEN — The giant pumpkins will return to New Bremen this weekend for an annual fall festival.
Pumpkinfest will run Friday and Saturday at Crown Pavilion, and this year’s festival will feature a slew of pumpkin-themed activities and a new showcase. Throughout the festival, a slew of pumpkin food items will be available.
“They have the pumpkin pancake breakfast, pumpkin brats, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin ale,” Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce Director Scott Frey told The Evening Leader.
Norman U. Menker, 82, of St. Marys, died at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Otterbein – St. Marys.
He was born on Aug. 6, 1930, in Dayton, to Alvin and Anna (Heitbrink) Menker, and they preceded him in death.
On July 2, 1955, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Fort Loramie, he married Rosemary T. Albers, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 2011.
