10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

For the second time in as many years, the Minster Wildcat girls finished the school year as the Division III state track and field champions, after a grueling two days of competition in Columbus. 

Under first-year head coach Kristen Heitkamp, the Orange and Black tallied 54 points, which was 11 better than runners-up Gates Mills Hawken. 

ACME Baseball: Wapak downs St. Marys

ST. MARYS — Aside from a failed early wooden bat experiment, Wapakoneta has continued its success into the summer.

“They tried them in batting practice in the spring and they thought they might want to try them in the game,” Wapakoneta ACME coach Willie Sammetinger said, with a chuckle. “Well, they broke $200 worth of bats last night in Elida. They just fractured them. So we’re slowly but surely starting to go back to metal.”

Whatever the material, Wapak’s baseball team can swing those bats.

Perch Hit Grand Lake St. Marys

ST. MARYS — Anglers hitting Grand Lake St. Marys may soon be catching yellow perch more often after a state sponsored fish stock.

On May 23, officials from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources released 100,408 yellow perch into Grand Lake St. Marys as part of an experimental stocking. ODNR Wildlife spokesperson Susie Vance told The Evening Leader the fish are no stranger to the lake.

Murderer Seeks Hearing

ST. MARYS — A convicted murderer is hoping to get his appeal heard by justices from Ohio’s highest court.

On May 14, Katherine Szudy, the attorney for Gordon W. Diggle III, filed a request to have her client’s case heard in the Ohio Supreme Court. Diggle was convicted in 2011 on murder, felonious assault and aggravated robbery charges in the Sept. 8, 2010, beating death of Steven Casad in the alley behind the Friendly Tavern. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Patricia Young, 76

Patricia Young, 76, of 225 Wayne St., St. Marys, died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012.
Arrangements are being completed at Cisco Funeral Home in St. Marys.

Thomas A. Rain, 60

June 8, 2012

Thomas A. Rain, 60, of 27 Summerplace Drive, Wapakoneta, died at 8:06 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born on Dec. 27, 1951, in Celina, to Harold and R. Maxine (Uncapher) Rain, and they preceded him in death.

Irma E. Oldiges, 96

June 8, 2012

Irma E. Oldiges, 96, of Minster, died at 4:23 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center. 

She was born on Oct. 11, 1915, in Russia, to Amedee and Clara (Couchot) Didier, and they preceded her in death.

On Sept. 2, 1939, in Russia, she married Louis F. Oldiges, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2006. 

She is survived by her children, Elaine (James) Simons of Sidney, John Oldiges of Minster and Donna (John) Cornwell of Minster; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

David C. Royse, 20

June 8, 2012

David C. Royse, 20, of Celina, died on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, where he had been hospitalized since a drowning incident at the Eastview Park pond in Celina on May 29.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1991, in St. Marys, to Lori Studer, who survives in Celina, and Steven Royse, who survives in Vandalia.

Ervin E. “Ed” Rohm 88

June 8, 2012

Ervin E. “Ed” Rohm 88, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:30 p.m. June 6, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1924, in Vanderbilt, Pa., to Curly E. and Ada (Blair) Rohm, and they preceded him in death. 

In 1948, he married Ardath Moyer, and she preceded him in death on May 12.

Kyle Busch wins Prelude to the Dream

ROSSBURG — If it has an engine, Kyle Busch has a good shot at getting it across the finish line first.

Busch is comfortable in any kind of race car, making his win at Eldora Speedway in the Feed the Children Prelude to the Dream on Wednesday night a natural extension of a strong five-year run at the rural Ohio dirt track.
