COLDWATER — The common link between Coldwater and Kirtland coming into Friday’s Division V state championship game is a team that didn’t even make the playoffs this season.
Both teams bowed out of the playoffs the last two seasons at the hands of private school power Youngstown Ursuline. Coldwater lost the last two Division V title game to the Irish. Kirtland fell earlier in the playoffs the last two years to Ursuline.
The two squads meet at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium on Friday morning at 11 a.m.

John G. Wermert, 93, of St. Henry, formerly of St. Sebastian and Coldwater, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at The Gardens at St. Henry.
He was born on Nov. 3, 1918, in St. Sebastian, to Herman and Rosa (Severt) Wermert, and they preceded him in death. On May 2, 1942, in Coldwater, he married Mary Ann (Holdheide), and she preceded him in death on April 7, 2000.
Debbie Richeson, 58, of Spencerville, died at 8:59 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville.
Lorraine Anne Becker Goodwin, 73, of Celina, died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born on May 17, 1938, in St. Marys, to Harold Temple and Betty J. (Koehn) Temple Horton, and they preceded her in death.
On Nov. 10, 1961, she married Hubert P. Becker, and he preceded her in death on April 16, 1980. On Nov. 15, 1983, she married Robert W. Goodwin, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 2010.
She is survived by a son, Hubert Todd Becker of Celina; three grandchildren.
Katherine C. “Katie” Elsass, 85, of Wapakoneta, died at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at her residence.
She was born on April 7, 1926, in Auglaize County, to Bernard and Matilda (Volbert) Watercutter, and they preceded her in death.
On Sept. 15, 1947, she married Ralph G. Elsass, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1994.
She is survived by three children, Michael (Teresa) Elsass of Columbus, Joyce (Michael) Schaub and Patty (Todd) Minnich, both of Wapakoneta; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister.
Mike Alge, 57, formerly of St. Marys, died on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2011, at University Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Arrangements are being completed with the Miller – Long & Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St., in St. Marys.
Frank Engle, 51, passed away on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, in Dayton.
He was born on June 16, 1960, in Mendon, to Benjamin and Janice (Severns) Engle, and his mother preceded him in death. His father and stepmother, Betty, survive him in Celina.
On Feb. 14, 1998, in Dayton, he married Katherine Messer, and she survives him.
NEW BREMEN — Residents of a local community will have the opportunity to pick a village organization’s holiday card for next year.
During the New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Club’s Christmas tree lighting on Thursday, residents will be able to vote on the New Bremen Community Improvement Corp.’s 2012 Christmas card as part of the CIC’s Christmas Card Photo Contest.
ST. MARYS — A local festival and parade returns this weekend, welcoming Santa into town.
Winterfest and the Santa parade will take place on Sunday, officially kicking off the holiday season in St. Marys.
Winterfest, which is put on by the St. Marys Optimist Club, will start first — beginning with a popular winter-season activity.
“We’ll have ice skating from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.,” Optimist Winterfest Chair Virg Bertke said.
She noted the ice skating was a new event last year.
