Boys Golf: Minster 2nd at Celina Invite, Wapak's Acheson takes 2nd

CELINA — Wapakoneta's Caleb Acheson never appeared to be in control on any of the four sudden death playoff holes to decide second place at the Celina Bulldog Invitational at Fox's Den on Friday.

He was the last of the four players standing four playoff holes later thanks to his stellar short game and scrambling ability, however.

Girls Tennis: Greenville hands Riders first loss

ST. MARYS — Greenville downed the St. Marys girls tennis team 5-0 on Friday morning.

"I told the girls that top to bottom this is probably the best team we'd face this year," St. Marys head coach Brice Brenneman said. "I knew they were good, but they were even a little better than I thought."

Greenville's Sophia Navas-Davis defeated St. Marys' Katie Peterson, 6-2, 6-0 at first singles.

Michelle Borgerding beat St. Marys' Emily Brown at second singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Policy Change Takes Effect

NEW KNOXVILLE — Third-grade students will soon be required to be reading at a certain level before they are able to move on to the fourth grade after Senate Bill 316 passed earlier this month.   

“All students entering the third grade must demonstrate a certain level of competency in reading before advancing to the fourth grade,” New Knoxville Superintendent Kim Waterman said Thursday night at the New Knoxville Board of Education meeting. “Almost all the provisions of this new law take effect this school year.”

Edna M. Lampert, 86

August 17, 2012

Edna M. Lampert, 86, of New Bremen, died at 5:27 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton of a sudden illness.

She was born on April 20, 1926, in Cranberry Prairie, the daughter of Joseph and Philomenia (Huwer) Quinter, and they preceded her in death.

On June 7, 1947, she married Thomas A. Lampert, and he preceded her in death on April 6, 2003.

Girls Tennis: St. Marys beats Piqua, 5-0, on new courts

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls tennis team opened a new era in its first match at the new blue and green tennis courts near Memorial High  School with a 5-0 over Piqua on Thursday morning.

GOLF: New Bremen edges Delphos St. John's

MINSTER  — The New Bremen boys golf team picked up a Midwest Athletic Conference win over Delphos St. John's on Thursday morning at Arrowhead Golf Club.

Delphos St. John's Nick Kayser fired a two-under par 34 for medalist honors.

New Bremen's Darin Bergman led the way for New Bremen with a 38.

Alex Britton had a 40, Tyler Hagen shot a 44 and Travis Bertelsen had a 46 for the Cardinals.

New Bremen will host Russia on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Arrowhead, with both the varsity and JV competing.

BOYS GOLF: Minster captures Auglaize Co. Invite, St. Marys' Bowman co-medalist

MINSTER — Carter Bowman wasn’t thrilled with a tie, even if it was for the best score on the course on Wednesday.

Bowman finished tied for medalist at the Auglaize County Invitational at Arrowhead Golf Club, but the St. Marys sophomore standout golfer was still kicking himself about how he finished down the stretch.

“It’s medalist, but it could’ve been a whole lot better,” Bowman said.

ST. MARYS — A group of more than 20 St. Marys youth gathered at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Wednesday afternoon for the third and final installment of Fishing, Fun & Fellowship.

Fishing, Fun & Fellowship was open to St. Marys students entering the first through fifth grade and was held once in June, July and August. The event was offered free of charge for participants through a grant.

ST. MARYS — As sirens wailed through the air, screams could be heard coming from the school bus turned over off U.S. 33. The first responders calmed down the frantic parents and the students’ peers, as others worked to free the trapped children and unconscious driver from the inside of the vehicle by cutting open the top of the bus. Luckily, everyone was extracted safely, but to those in the audience, it represented their worst fear.

Minster wins Cardinal Invite, Bremen 6th, Riders 7th, Rangers take 11th

MINSTER — The Minster boys golf team distanced itself from the rest of the 14-team field to capture the Cardinal Invitational in the comfort of its home course Arrowhead Golf Club on Tuesday.

Minster sophomore Xavier Francis fired a two-over par 74, Freddie Purdy and John Burke each had 78s, and Josh Tumbusch shot an 82 for the Minster team total of 312.

Minster was 10 shots clear of second-place Russia, which shot a 322 on a day of early rain followed by clear, cool conditions.
