Zoe Grace Parker, 96, formerly of 1903 Kimberly Drive, St. Marys, a resident of Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community, died at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Otterbein St. Marys.
She was born on Jan. 12, 1916, in Leipsic, the daughter of Roy and Mary (Zerbach) David, and they preceded her in death.
She married Robert D. Parker on Nov. 19, 1939, and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1981.
ROCKFORD - Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reported this morning that Mercer County recorded its 13th and 14th traffic fatalities from nine fatal crashes this year.
"This has been a tragic year on Mercer County Highways," Grey said in a news release.
Four deaths have been recorded in the last 8 days.
WAPAKONETA — When Mike Grove saw something that needed to be done along the Miami and Erie Canal, he went out and did it.
“To me that’s what made Mike extraordinary,” Heritage Trails Park District Director Allison Brady said of Grove, who passed away on Tuesday. “He saw a need and he decided not just to meet the need but to create a whole volunteer core and went through a whole process to meet the need … He had a vision for what we needed, and he was right.”
ST. MARYS — Residents will have the opportunity to bid on and possibly take home former St. Marys City Schools items as part of an auction set for next week.
On Saturday, the district will conduct an auction in the grassy area south of the St. Marys Intermediate School track beginning at 10 a.m.
MINSTER — An Ohio senator toured a handful of businesses in southern Auglaize County Friday, touting the area’s economic resolve while calling for more common sense regulations.
During a whirlwind visit, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman made stops at Dannon, Crown Equipment and Buschur Electric to talk with officials regarding the current economic picture as well as what can be done to promote business in the country. Portman’s last visit was to Buschur Electric, where he spoke about the company’s owner Jack Buschur and his involvement in regulatory reform.
Laverta E.W. Scheer, 94, formerly of New Bremen and a resident of the Otterbein Retirement Community of St. Marys for the past eight years, died at 10:18 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Otterbein.

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame will induct 11 players and coaches who starred in the state including St. Henry native Ron Niekamp and his University of Findlay 2009 Division II champs, former St. Henry High School coach Fran Guilbault and Wapakoneta’s Steve Trout, who was picked by his fellow officials.
Among the inductees are Miami’s Randy Ayers and Wally Szczerbiak, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Brad Daugherty, the University of Cincinnati’s Kenyon Martin and UConn’s Tamika Williams Raymond.
Vivian A. Gilbert, 69, of 409 Webb St., St. Marys, died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at her residence.
She was born on May 13, 1943, in Mercer County.
On June 27, 1970, she married Johnny “Gene” Gilbert, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 2000.
ST. MARYS — The county sheriff is warning residents to be aware of a scam that involves someone posing as him looking for money and threatening possible arrest.
Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said a county resident notified the sheriff’s office Wednesday night regarding a scam that involved a caller with a foreign accent indicating he was “Sheriff’s County Officer Allen Solomon.” The problem with that is Solomon and his deputies are not officers.
