St. Marys season ticket pick-up until Thursday

August 8, 2012

Individuals who ordered St. Marys football season tickets may pick up their tickets until Thursday, Aug. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the high school office.  Season tickets not claimed will be sold to the public on Thursday, Aug. 9 starting at 7 p.m.  Those wishing to purchase new seats or trade seats may do so.  The athletic department also has 60 parking passes available for sale at $20 per pass.

Mary Lou Bornhorst, 82

August 7, 2012

Mary Lou Bornhorst, 82, of Fort Loramie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at Dorothy Love Retirement Community.

Mary Lou, the youngest of 13 children, was born on Nov. 25, 1929, in Fort Loramie, to John and Anna Borchers, both deceased. On May 22, 1951, she was married to Homer J. Bornhorst, who survives her.

Martha M. Rosenbeck, 88

August 7, 2012

Martha M. Rosenbeck, 88, formerly of Chickasaw and New Bremen, died at 2:55 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at the Briarwood Village, Coldwater.

She was born on Dec. 22, 1923, east of Minster, in Shelby County. She was the daughter of John and Alvina (Berning) Horstman. On Nov. 7, 1942, she married Eugene Rosenbeck, and he preceded her in death.

Duane Allen Hower, 36

August 7, 2012

Duane Allen Hower, 36, of Wapakoneta, died on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, in a motor vehicle accident.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1975, in Lima, to Eddie D. and Mickie S. (Howell) Hower, who survive in Wapakoneta.

Mr. Hower worked for Minster Machine, loved sports with his son and nephews, enjoyed playing pool and was a devoted father and uncle.

Sheriff Suspends Deputy

CELINA — The handler for the Mercer County K-9 unit has been suspended for more than a month in the wake of the animal’s death last week.

On Monday, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announced Deputy Chad Fortkamp, Zak’s handler, has been suspended without pay for 45 working days as a result of the events leading to the dog’s death last week. Grey noted the suspension equated to a $6,500 penalty.

Honoring Zak

CELINA — Dog lovers and their furry friends gathered at the shelterhouse at the Celina Rotary Dog Park Monday evening to remember one of their own — a fallen canine sheriff’s officer.

A group of area residents organized a celebration remembrance ceremony for Zak, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office K-9 who died last week after being left in the canine officer’s car.

Dash For Cash Returns

ST. MARYS — The Evening Leader and the Wapakoneta Daily News will again have a $10,000 cash giveaway as a promotion for participating sponsors. The event, The $10,000 Dash for Cash, is being held after the success of previous giveaways.

This is the sixth time the newspapers have held a big-prize giveaway. Previously cars and gas cards have been given away.

Patrons can visit any of the 72 participating sponsors in The Evening Leader and Wapakoneta Daily News coverage area to enter.

Bids Fly At Sale

WAPAKONETA — The grand champion market steer’s selling price, setting a new high-water mark for steers, highlighted the second day of the Auglaize County Fair livestock auction, but for the second consecutive year an emotional moment caused tears to flow for bidders and two exhibitors.

Caitlin Schaub sold the grand champion market steer for $20,000 to five buyers, far eclipsing the $11,600 paid for Paige Klopfenstein’s grand champion market steer last year.

Hertenstein Takes Crown

ST. MARYS —  Seven girls took to the stage on Sunday night, vying for the title of 2012 SummerFest Queen — in the end Brooke Hertenstein walked away with the crown and sash in front of a packed crowd at Memorial High School.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Hertenstein told The Evening Leader moments after being crowned. “I was not expecting it at all because I know all the girls did a pretty good job and I know it was really close.”
