DEFIANCE — Weston Rivers earned his fifth win of the season on the mound for Defiance and the Bulldogs scored six runs in the first two innings in a 7-1 win over  the St. Marys baseball team on Tuesday.

 Codie Deaton pitched and took the loss for the Roughriders.

St. Marys fell to 2-11 while Defiance kept its years long winning streak in the WBL going and went to 16-0 on the season.

Niemeyer pitches Minster past Coldwater

MINSTER — Minster senior Adam Niemeyer has only pitched 22 innings so far this season. Minster head coach Mike Wiss knows he needs his top pitcher fresh for games like the one on Tuesday night.

Minster’s ace and future Buckeye came through in the Wildcats’ biggest game to date.

Niemeyer struck out eight in a two-hit shutout to lead the Minster baseball team to a 2-0 win over Coldwater in a Midwest Athletic Conference showdown at Hanover Street Park.

Local Students Get Pinned

ST. MARYS — St. Marys Tri Star Med Prep class held their 17th annual pinning ceremony for the graduating class of 2013, where the graduates were given their caduceus pins and took the health occupations pledge by candlelight at the Dennings Center.

The students, adviser Janet Nelson said, will wear this pins through the upcoming two weeks of observation.

Pauline R. Schmiesing, 89

Pauline R. Schmiesing, 89, of Minster, died at 6:11 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2013, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital. 

She was born on Sept. 21, 1923, in Fort Loramie, to the late Clemens and Emma (Seger) Bender. 

She married Melvin H. Schmiesing on April 27, 1946, in Fort Loramie.  He preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 2010. 

Joseph “Jody” A. Barr, 55

May 1, 2013

Joseph “Jody” A. Barr, 55,  passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus.

He was born on May 24, 1959.

He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Margie (Jones) Barr; his mother, Connie (Kessler) Barr; brothers, Keith (Susie) and Brian (Pam) Barr; sister, Beth (Bill) Butts; an aunt and uncle, Jack and Marilyn Barr; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Jody was preceded in death by his father, Laurin Barr.

Monday Sports Round-Up

MINSTER — With a few gift runs in the first couple innings the Minster softball team put the ball in play and defeated the New Bremen Cardinals 6-1 Monday in a MAC game played at Minster.

The first three runs for the Wildcats were unearned due to errors.

Event To Help Local

CELINA — Students are raising money to pay for their classmate’s heart transplant with a 5K called “Find the Beat Again” at Wright State University’s Lake Campus at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Friends of WSU student Rachel Doseck planned the event, Doseck said, to feel like they had some way to help her after an extended illness caused by her body rejecting her heart transplant. She received another heart on Jan.10.

Doseck told The Evening Leader what it’s like to have your heart stop in the hospital.

Riders Hit Catwalk

ST. MARYS — Memorial High School students were decked out in sequins, glitter, top hats and ties Saturday night for the Promenade in Memorial Park, where friends and family watched them walk the local version of the red carpet.

The students gave a nod to the theme “Fantasea” by giving the first catwalk opportunity to students in sea-themed costumes.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to come out and see the school and the students,” said Becky Macwhinney, of the Chamber of Commerce, who helped coordinate the event.

Mary M. Poppe, 89

April 29, 2013

Mary M. Poppe, 89, of 1807 Kingsbury Drive in St. Marys, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.

She was born on April 6, 1924, in St. Marys, to Charles and Sylvia (Grunden) Eberle.

Survivors include a    daughter, Linda Sue (Robert Schumacher) Poppe of St. Marys; a brother, C. Albert (Arlene) Eberle  of St. Marys; a sister, Patricia Burden  of Lima; numerous nieces and nephews.

St. Marys track competes at Redskin Relays

WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys boys and girls track teams competed at the Wapakoneta Redskin Invitational on Friday at Harmon Field.

The Roughrider girls finished eighth in the 10-team event with 19 points while the Rider boys took ninth with 21 points.
