Heather R. McCormick, 40, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Harris Road and Ohio 29, in a traffic accident.
She was born on Sept. 26, 1973, in Van Wert County, to parents Terry and Sharon Boroff Williams, both of whom survive in Celina.
On May 18, 1996, she married Durand McCormick, who survives.
Palmer Halbert, 86, of 328 Oliver St., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born on July 26, 1927, in Salisbury, Ky., the son of Garner and Nannie (Stewart) Halbert.
He married Nannie Foster on April 19, 1947, in Paintsville, Ky., and she survives at the residence.
He is survived by his four children, Pam (Byron) Chivington of St. Marys, Paula Peters of Kettering, Wanda Sawmiller of St. Marys, Warren (Michelle) Halbert of St. Marys.
Avelene Louise Metzger, 91, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 10:12 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at her residence, surrounded by her family.
She was born on May 12, 1922, in Waynesfield, the daughter of Harrison Guy and Glenna Irene (Hefner) Gossard, who preceded her in death.
On May 2, 1943, she married Amos Howard Wilson, who died in 1944, serving in World War II.
Then on May 12, 1948, she married Chester Lee Metzger, and he died on April 26, 1991.
NEW BREMEN — The board of directors of the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce has accepted the resignation of Scott Frey as its director. Frey notified the board on Monday following his acceptance of a position with a local private firm.
Frey has served as executive director for the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber since Aug. 31, 2009. Frey will conclude his work with the chamber on March 24.
The board of directors is in the process of beginning the search for its next director.
Richard A. “Rick” Moon III, 36, of 07507 Washington Pike, St. Marys, died on Sunday, March 9, 2014, near his home on Washington Pike.
He was born on Feb. 26, 1978, in St. Marys, the son of Richard and Cheryl (Carpenter) Moon.
He married Michelle Kittel on Oct. 25, 2008, and she survives in New Knoxville.
Donald L. “Mick” McDermitt, 81, of St. Marys, died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Lima Memorial Hospital after a long battle with leukemia.
He was born on Aug. 31, 1932, in New Bremen, the son of Clarence “Shorty” and Cordelia (Quellhorst) McDermitt.
Don graduated from St. Marys Memorial High School in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and served four years. After his military time, he worked as a mechanic at Dull’s Texaco Service Station.
Thomas L. Gabel, 82, formerly of New Knoxville, died on Sunday, March 15, 2014, at Gulfside Regional Hospice in Zephyrhills, Fla.
He was born on Jan. 9, 1932, in Columbus, to William Henry and Ruth (McPherson) Gabel.
On Jan. 31, 1953, in Washington, D.C., he married Gloria June McHugh, who died on Jan. 2, 2000.
He later married Ruth Hildreth in 2001, who survives in Columbus.
CELINA — Deputies in Mercer County are investigating a fatal collision that took place this morning.
At approximately 6:59 a.m. today, the Mercer County Sheriff's Office received a call from a person, who was driving a hydraulic crane on Ohio 29 and Harris Road, reporting his vehicle was struck in the rear.
Paul D. Helmer, 20, of 435 Parker Street, St. Marys, died on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at his residence.
He was born on Oct. 29, 1993, in Dayton, the son of Derrill and Deborah (Rogge) Helmer.
He is survived by his father, Derrill Helmer, of St. Marys; his mother, Deborah Helmer, of Dayton; his paternal grandparents, Sherrill (Kay) Helmer, of Dayton; maternal grandfather Dan (Shirley) Rogge, of Dayton; maternal grandmother Diane Daley, of Dayton.
ST. MARYS — Deputies from the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a rural St. Marys man.
At approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office received a call of a male hanging from a bridge support in the 7000 block of Washington Pike. Deputies and detectives from the sheriff’s office responded to the scene and located a deceased male hanging upside down from the bridge with his leg caught in a guardrail support post.
