New Bremen, Marion Local move on

COLDWATER — The New Bremen Cardinals had help from their bench and managed a second half comeback to defeat the New Knoxville Rangers 49-45 Tuesday in the first game of the Division IV sectional tournament held at the Palace in Coldwater.

St. Marys, Celina advance to sectional title games

LIMA — The tournament offers up opportunities for unlikely heroes. St. Marys found one deep on its bench.

That big lift and a run to start the second half has the St. Marys boys basketball team moving on the Division II sectional tournament at Lima Senior.

Tyler Sullivan scored 16 points off the bench and a 9-0 spurt in the third quarter keyed St. Marys’ 64-58 win over the Shawnee Indians on Tuesday night.

Robbery Suspect Sought

NEW BREMEN — Law enforcement officials in Auglaize County are looking for a suspect believed to be responsible for an armed robbery near New Bremen Wednesday afternoon.

The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 1:11 p.m. Wednesday reporting a robbery at a residence along Amsterdam Road, just west of New Bremen.

Emma J. Schemmel, 73

February 26, 2014

Emma J. Schemmel, 73, of New Bremen, died on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at 4:40 p.m. at the Celina Manor, Celina.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1940, in New Bremen.  

She was the daughter of Norman and Annabel (Dickman) Scheer.  

Survivors include her children, Richard Schemmel and Brian (Jennifer) Schemmel; both of New Bremen and Teresa Moore of Frankfort, Ky.; eight grandchildren and her brother, Paul (Dorothy) Scheer of Fryburg.  

Preceding her in death were her parents and her brother, Charles Scheer.

Toni L. Fischbach, 65

Toni L. Fischbach, 65, of 14933 Bay Road, Wapakoneta, died accidentally on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Greenville Falls, near Covington.

She was born on March 5, 1948, in Dayton, the daughter of Arthur “Curly” Swank and Virginia (Johnston) Swank.

She married Larry Fischbach on April 3, 1976, in St. Marys, and he survives at the residence.

She is also survived by her two daughters, Tammy (Dennis) Hayden of Fostoria; Angela (Mark) Stilley of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and by her mother-in-law, Dorothy Fischbach of Piqua.

The New Bremen Village Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. today.

A book discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the Wissman Room at Otterbein. "Cutting for Stone" by Abraham Verghese will be discussed.

Wind Chill Advisory Issued

ST. MARYS — The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a wind chill advisory in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday with wind chill readings that could reach minus-10 to minus-15 degrees.

COLDWATER — When shots aren’t falling, the New Knoxville girls basketball team has a pretty good safety net in a defense that shuts down opponents and a player like Haley Horstman who can create quality shots off the dribble.

Far from an offensive masterpiece, the Rangers team again showed they’re more than capable of winning a low-scoring affair to capture a Division IV sectional title with a 47-32 win over Fort Recovery on Saturday night.

St. Marys girls bowling district runner-up, state bound

LIMA — The St. Marys girls bowling team finished as the district runner-up and will compete at the OHSAA state bowling championships this weekend in Columbus while senior Kristen Dammeyer was the top bowler with a 608 series.

St. Marys finished second with a final team score of 3,529 pins. Coldwater won the district title with a score of 3.680. Napoleon (3,433) and Port Clinton (3,391) also advance to state.
