Ralph W. Smith Jr., 83, of 1704 Fenway Court in St. Marys, died on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Kindred Hospital in Lima.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1931 in Neptune, to Ralph and Nora (Rutledge) Smith Sr.
On Aug. 20, 1982, in Wapakoneta, he married Betty J. Jones, who survives.
NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville Rangers did everything in their power to help Paige Lehman get 1,000th point with the game already well in hand on Monday night.
The persistence paid off. Lehman knocked down a free throw to score the 1,000th point of her career in the waning seconds of the Rangers’ 44-22 win over St. Henry.
Lehman had 12 of the 17 points she needed to reach the milestone at the half on 6 of 8 shooting, but the Redskins made it tough on the Ranger senior by packing the paint with a zone defense in the second half.
Werner J. Bruggeman, 88, of Erie Drive, Maria Stein, passed away of natural causes on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Celina Manor, in Celina.
He was born on Dec. 13, 1925, in Coldwater, to the late Edward and Catherine (Buening) Bruggeman.
On April 18, 1951, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McCartyville, Werner married Dolores (Barhorst) Bruggeman, who survives.
WAPAKONETA — A Michigan man is in custody after he allegedly robbed a Wapakoneta Subway restaurant Monday night.
At approximately 5:07 p.m. Monday, the Wapakoneta Police Department received a phone call from employees at the Subway at 1401 Bellefontaine St., regarding a robbery. A male subject reportedly entered the store, produced a weapon and demanded money. The suspect fled the scene heading east on Bellefontaine Street in a mini-van with Michigan license plates. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the store.
LIMA — St. Marys’ Madison Taylor, Molly Menker and Jared Deubler along with Minster’s Nikki Borgerding and Kara Kitzmiller all were crowned sectional champions as the Roughriders, and Wildcats along with New Bremen are sending swimmers to the district meet at Cleveland State after top finishes at Saturday’s Division II sectional at the Lima YMCA.
MINSTER — St. Marys’ defensive intensity went from lax to suffocating and the result of all the diving on the floor, quick hands in the passing lanes and runout baskets was a comeback 48-44 win at Minster to finish off a weekend sweep for the Roughriders.
CELINA — An inmate at the Mercer County Jail could face charges after he was allegedly found to have made a shank.
Carol Dunlap–Reis, 70, of 09138 Burr Oak Road in Wapakoneta, died on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born on March 4, 1943, in Celina, to Hubert Byron and Margaret Alice (Burd) Davenport.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Byers of St. Marys, Theresa Dunlap of Lima, a son, Ed Dunlap of Wapakoneta, 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a sister, Nina (Howard) Barnhart of Cloverdale.
Anna Marie (Vogan) Diedrich, 63, of 1002 N. Sugar St. in Celina, passed away at 4:54 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus after an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 6, 1951 in Celina, to the late Adam and Carol (Greber) Vogan.
On Nov. 21, 1970, she married James Allen Diedrich, who died on Jan. 16, 1993.
