Gwendolyn V. Burd, 90

Gwendolyn V. Burd, 90, of 1013 Cleveland Ave. in St. Marys, died at 12:01 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2014, at her residence.

She was born on Jan. 10, 1924, in St. Marys, to Russell H. and Mabel M. (Parke) Young Sr.

On April 10, 1948, in Decatur, Ind., she married Harry L. Burd, Sr., who died on Dec. 1, 2005.

Nancy A. Koeper, 68

Nancy A. Koeper, 68, of 800 Bryarly Circle, St. Marys, died at 10:57 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Lima Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.

She was born on Aug. 5, 1945, in Lima, the daughter of Melvin and Mildred (Thuman) Luedeke.

She married Kenneth Koeper on Sept. 21, 1963, at Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ in New Bremen.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Koeper, by her daughter, Kimberly (Dale) Miller of St. Marys, by a sister, Connie Frey of Celina and a brother, Thomas Luedeke of St. Marys.

Donald L. “Don” Method, 82

April 21, 2014

Donald L. “Don” Method, 82, of rural New Knoxville, died at 11:29 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2014, in the ER Department of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, following a sudden illness, with his daughter at his side.

He was born on May 23, 1931, in Warsaw, Ind., a son of Burdette Hartman and Helen Louise Crowl  Method, who are deceased.

In 1949, he married Norma J. Slater, who is deceased, and in 1955, he married Patricia A. Jay, who is also deceased.

On Oct. 3, 1996, he married Letha A. Hager Hennon, who survives.

Crews Respond To Fire

ST. MARYS — The cause of a structure fire Friday night remains under investigation.

At approximately 9:48 p.m. Friday, the St. Marys Fire Department received a phone call reporting a structure fire at 717 E. Spring St. Crews arrived on the scene and found heavy smoke coming from the structure.

"It was in a second-story bedroom," St. Marys Firefighter/Paramedic Andy Fischbach told The Evening Leader. "They made entry through the front door and wrapped around up the stairs to the seam of the fire."

St. Marys breezes past Lima Senior, 15-0

ST. MARYS — Four different St. Marys hitters drove two runs, the offense put up a 10-spot in the fourth inning and a pair of  Roughrider pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as Memorial made quick work of the Lima Senior Spartans 15-0 in five innings on Friday at K.C. Geiger Park.

St. Marys (9-1) received yet another strong start from its pitching staff that has led the way to a five-game winning streak. St. Marys hasn’t given up a run in their last 12 innings of play.

Cat Excels In The Outfield

MINSTER — As a first grader playing his first season of tee ball, Max Huber says he aspired to be like his father.

His father played catcher for the University of Findlay’s baseball team for a few years, and his love for the sport was inspiration and motivation for Huber. Huber played for fun and to be with all his friends, who were also playing tee ball at the time.

“We always had a good time at the ballpark,” Huber said. “So, I guess it was something that we could do together.”

Margaret Ann (Sauner) Eing, 69

Margaret Ann (Sauner) Eing, 69, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014.

She was born on Nov. 22, 1944, in Brown County, to the late Earl and Violet (Vance) Sauner.

She attended Memorial High School in St. Marys prior to graduating from Eastmoor High School in Columbus and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio State University.

Margaret was a teacher with Whitehall City Schools before stepping away to raise her children. When she went back to work, she was employed with Sears Co. and later retired from BMW Financial Services.

2 Arrested Following Traffic Stop

NEW KNOXVILLE — Two Mercer County men were arrested in New Knoxville following a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.

Members of the Grand Lake Drug Task Force conducted surveillance on a vehicle that was suspected on carrying illegal drugs. As the vehicle entered Auglaize County, it was stopped by a deputy with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office at the Marathon gas station in New Knoxville.

MINSTER — The Minster softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 7-0 win over Newton on Wednesday.

Cyclist Killed In Collision

SIDNEY — A New Knoxville man has been charged with a misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter as a result of a collision Tuesday night.
