Irella C. Wente, 97

March 5, 2014

Irella C. Wente, 97, of New Bremen, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Elmwood Assisted Living in New Bremen.

She was born on Feb. 26, 1917, in Cranberry Prairie, to the late John and Loretta (Reier) Brockman.  

She married Raymond J. Wente on Nov. 8, 1941, in Cranberry Prairie, and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1996.

Competitive Balance Set For Vote

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors has unanimously approved a Competitive Balance proposal that makes modifications on how schools are placed in tournaments in team sports. The plan, recommended to the Board from the 27-member OHSAA Competitive Balance Committee, is similar to the proposal that member schools voted upon last spring.

Robert J. Mowery, 101

Robert J. Mowery, 101, formerly of Eaton, died on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Otterbein St. Marys.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1912, in Stelvideo, to John and W. Alice (Dunker) Mowery, both of whom preceded him in death.

On April 12, 1936, Easter Sunday, at her parents’ residence, he married Dola Duke, who died on Dec. 28, 2007.

He is survived by a son, Robert L. (Marcia) Mowery  of Summerfield, Fla.; and a brother, Malcolm  of Lewisburg.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, David, Rodney, Chalmer and Denver Mowery.

Timothy J. Makley, 60

March 4, 2014

Timothy J. Makley, 60, of 05911 Botkins Road, New Knoxville, died at 6:53 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at his residence, following a short illness.

He was born on April 10, 1953, in Celina, the son of George and Ruth (Baker) Makley, both of whom preceded him in death.

He married Julie M. Wendel on April 29, 1983, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Marys, and she survives at the residence.

Paul J. Niekamp, 86

March 4, 2014

Paul J. Niekamp, 86, of New Bremen, died at 6:20 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen.

He was born on May 12, 1927, in St. Sebastian.   

He was the son of Bernard and Mathilda (Schmitmeyer) Niekamp.

He was preceded in death by his beloved Ruthie Gerlach on Dec. 20, 2013, whom he had married on July 27, 1949 in Carthagena.

Rider boys and girls basketball players named to All-WBL lists

The improved St. Marys boys basketball team garnered three spots on the Western Buckeye League’s All-League lists released over the weekend.

St. Marys junior Isaac Fitzgerald was named Second Team All-WBL.

Roughrider sophomore Nathan Wilker earned Third Team All-WBL.

St. Marys senior guard Marquis Wilson was Honorable Mention.

Elida’s Dakota Mathias won Player of the Year once again.

Riders 11th at state bowling

COLUMBUS — The St. Marys girls bowling team finished 11th at the Division II state bowling tournament on Saturday.

The Roughriders bowled a team score of 2,807 pins in the qualifying round while senior Kristen Dammeyer finished 16th individually with a three-game series of 559.

St. Marys’ Drew Houser was 41st overall with a 498 series. Abby Smith had a 446 series, Serena Rockwood bowled a two-game total of 258, Faith Monnin bowled a 162 in her one game and Paige Keysor had a 133 in her one game

New Knoxville rolls past Minster for district title

WAPAKONETA — The New Knoxville starting five left the floor and had a group hug on the bench with time to spare in the fourth quarter, a prospect that didn’t seem likely when two of the best teams in Division IV squared off.

Prepared for a battle between two of the top teams in the Midwest Athletic Conference, the New Knoxville girls basketball team instead steamrolled to a district title with a 54-31 win over Minster at the Division IV tournament at Wapakoneta on Saturday night.

Spencerville holds off New Bremen, Flyers win low-scoring affair over Fort Recovery

COLDWATER – The New Bremen boys basketball team’s comeback just came up short in the fourth quarter against the Spencerville Bearcats on Friday night in a 52-48 loss in a Division IV sectional final at Coldwater.

Marion Local defeated Fort Recovery and its four-corner offense for the second straight week 27-23 to win the sectional title.

New Bremen battled adversity all night, including losing leading scorer Carson Manger, who scored 15 points, to fouls with six minutes left in the game.
