Bobby Kennedy wins Governor's Cup Regatta

CELINA — Bobby Kennedy ended Dan Kanfoush’s reign as holder of the Governor’s Cup, halting years of frustratingly close finishes.

Kennedy won via tiebreaker over four-time Governor’s Cup and three-time defending champion Kanfoush this weekend at the hydroplane racing event on  Grand Lake St. Marys.

Kennedy has finished second to his younger cousin Brandon in 2008 and often to Kanfoush.

Riders pour on points in Chicken Bowl tune-up

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys football team welcomed Doug Frye’s return to the home sideline of Skip Baughman Stadium with big play after big play, as the Roughriders outscored Urbana 41-7 in a little over a half of timed football on Friday night in the annual Chicken Bowl.

 Eric Spicer scampered in from three yards out to cap the drive after Spicer ripped off 33 yards earlier in the drive on a counter down the right sideline.

Raymond A. Heitman, 89

Raymond A. Heitman, 89, of 10701 State Route 119, Anna, died at 8:12 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney, following a brief illness.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1924, in Minster, to Albert and Margaret (Zircher) Heitman. They preceeded him in death.

He was married on April 25,1945, to Betty Hamp, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 2011.

Swimmer Pushes Herself

ST. MARYS — Molly Menker has spent the better part of her life so far in the water.

This will be the Memorial High School senior’s 14th year swimming on various teams, including the YMCA and the Roughrider swim teams. It was something her parents threw her into and that she grew to love quickly.

“I just started out with swim lessons and the summer swim team when I was little, and it just really clicked and I liked it a lot, so my parents put me into the Y swim team in the winter when I was 7,” Menker said.

New Card Joins Classroom

NEW BREMEN — Tess Moeller, of Chickasaw, says teaching in city schools, while never the environment she saw herself in long-term, taught her that the less students had the more they needed their teachers.

“The kids didn’t have as much home support,” Moeller said. “Knowing they felt the safest and most loved when they came to school made me know what an impact teachers can have on students.”

Spill Turns River Red

ST. MARYS — A portion of the St. Marys River turned red on Thursday.

St. Marys Safety-Service Director Greg Foxhoven said an equipment failure at an industrial account on McKinley Road caused approximately 55 gallons of food grade red dye to be sent into the wastewater system of the city of St. Marys. After passing through the city's system, the water was then discharged into the St. Marys River — as is typical with the finished water at the facility.

Sanders Gets Life

CELINA — Trevin Sanders will more than likely never see the outside of a prison cell.

Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Ingraham sentenced Sanders to two consecutive terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in the murders of Colleen and Robert Grube in November 2011. The sentence was identical to the one handed down to codefendant Bryant Rhoades last week.

Alphonse C. Schroeder, 88

August 20, 2014

Alphonse C. Schroeder, 88, of Columbus Grove, formerly of New Bavaria passed away at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at The Meadows of Kalida.

Al was born on Aug. 2, 1926, near New Cleveland, to August and Frances (Maag) Schroeder, both of whom preceded him in death.

He married Angela Klear, who survives at The Meadows of Kalida, on Aug. 2, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria. He celebrated 64 years of marriage with the love of his life.
