17 Arrested In Sweep

ST. MARYS — More than a dozen people were arrested on Tuesday in the latest efforts by the Grand Lake Task Force in the fight against drugs.

Seventeen people from across the county were arrested on indictments following lengthy investigations by the task force. Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said the fight against drugs in the county will continue.

“As promised we have continued to investigate the drug sales in this county and surrounding counties,” Solomon said in a news release.

Norma Jean Schumm, 88

Norma Jean Schumm, 88, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 1 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Millers Merry Manor in Syracuse.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1925, in Willshire, to David F. and Florene M. (Dudgeon) Carr.

She grew up in Willshire and graduated in 1943 from Willshire High School.

She was married on June 2, 1946, in Willshire, to Henry L. “Hank” Schumm, who preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 2005.

Opal L. Miller, 98

July 14, 2014

Opal L. Miller, 98, of Cridersville, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2014, at Cridersville Health Care.

She was born on Aug. 2, 1915, in Auglaize County, the daughter of the late Isaac and Louise Schlenker Mowery.

On April 8, 1937, she married Elbert Merle Miller, who died on July 8, 2000.

Locals Seek Cure For “Sweet Pea”

NEW BREMEN — Adriane Schmackers, or Sweet Pea as her parents call her, has just learned to speak.

The 4-year-old girl can now learn to say the words “mom” and “dad” and communicate with her friends and family.

“She’s actually been doing really well,” said aunt and co-owner of New Bremen Massage Clinic Linda Baker. “She understands you when you talk to her; she’s a great kid. She listens well.”

Lavina L. Stolte, 99

Lavina L. Stolte, 99, of Otterbein Cridersville, formerly of Wapakoneta, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Otterbein Cridersville.  

She was born on Nov. 25, 1914, in New Knoxville, the daughter of Christian and Sarah (Kuck) Melter.

She was a 1932 graduate of New Knoxville High School.  

On Nov. 9, 1935, she married Robert F. Stolte, the love of her life, who preceded her in death on May 10, 1994.  

She had been a resident of Otterbein Cridersville since 1996.

Thomas Ferris, 83

Thomas Ferris, 83, of Beavercreek, formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in St. Marys, to the late William and Johanna Ferris.

Thomas served during the Korean War as an Sp4 for the United States Army. He was an officer for the American Welding Society and was the top volunteer for the Shepherd Center in Wintston-Salem, N.C. He worked for Westinghouse and Hobart.

Heavy Metal Fundraising

Old refrigerators, pieces of scrap metal from area farms, schools and homes along with the more large-scale donations of some local industry all added up to a big boost for football players of all ages in St. Marys.

The Roughrider Touchdown Club raised more than $7,100 during a recent scrap metal drive. That comes out to more than 50,000 pounds of scrap metal from more than 80 families and companies around St. Marys. St. Marys varsity football players helped move the heavy scrap a large metal containter that was filled once and was filled up a second time.

Officers Probe Break-in

WAPAKONETA — Investigators in Wapakoneta are probing a break-in at a local business.

At 4:50 a.m. today, the Wapakoneta Police Department received an alarm call from Cashland, 1254 Bellefontaine St. When the first officer arrived on the scene, he observed a person inside the business. Additional officers arrived on the scene and surrounded the building. They then made entry and the assistance of the K-9 unit. No one was located inside the building and it is believed the subject fled before the building could be surrounded.

Melissa Stolz Schlarman, 49

Melissa Stolz Schlarman, 49, of Bismarck, N.D., formerly of Celina, died on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at Stanford Hospital in Bismarck, N.D., of natural causes.

She was born on Dec. 8, 1964, in Celina, to parents Marvin Stolz and Rita Piper of Celina.

She was formerly married to Joe Schlarman of Powell.

Kirk A. Fritz, 61

Kirk A. Fritz, 61, of Perrysburg, passed on Friday, July 4, 2014, at 10:17 p.m.

He was born on Aug. 12, 1952, to the late Harold Richard and Mary Lou Lybarger Fritz. 

He married Judith L. Smith on Nov. 2, 1991, and she survives in Perrysburg.

Kirk was a department manager for Lowes, a sales associate for Bass Pro Shop and he was also a member of Perrysburg Alliance Church. 

Through his years, he had been a Boy Scout leader, Little League coach and umpire and had coached summer baseball for Perrysburg High School.
