Minster girls 13th in first AP hoops poll

A small area of Auglaize and Shelby Counties have three of the top 13 ranked teams in Division IV girls basketball in Ohio, as the first statewide poll was released on Monday night.

The Minster girls basketball team (8-2) is 13th in theAP poll, while the Marion Local Flyers are atop Division IV. Fort Loramie, which lost to Minster earlier this season, is ranked third in Division IV.

Versailles is seventh and Coldwater is ranked 10th in Division III. Lima Bath is 13th in Division II.

Frigid Temps Bring Risks

ST. MARYS — Local residents saw snow and freezing temperatures on Monday that dropped as low as minus-11 degrees with wind chills as low as minus-40 degrees.

The National Weather Service’s wind chill warning cautioned St. Marys residents that wind chills this low are dangerous and that frostbite and hypothermia are real dangers in such temperatures.

Mark D. Ruschau, 54

January 7, 2014

Mark D. Ruschau, 54, of New Bremen, died at 6:45 p.m.  Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

He was born on July 11, 1959, in Coldwater to the late Jerome “Jim” and the late Pauline (Mescher) Ruschau.  

He married Theresa Nerderman on March 13, 1993, in New Bremen. She survives in New Bremen.

Mark D. Ruschau, 54

Mark D. Ruschau, 54, of New Bremen, died at 6:45 p.m.  Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

He was born on July 11, 1959, in Coldwater to the late Jerome “Jim” and the late Pauline (Mescher) Ruschau.  

He married Theresa Nerderman on March 13, 1993, in New Bremen. She survives in New Bremen.

Michael Fishbaugh, 63

January 6, 2014

Michael Fishbaugh, 63, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at his residence in Celina, of natural causes.

He was born on Sept. 14, 1950, in Celina, to parents Eathan (Pearl)Fishbaugh and Betty Jane Sweigart, both of whom preceded him in death.

He married Brenda Fry on Dec. 7, 1968, and she survives in Celina.

Area Round-Up: Rangers, Cardinals and Wildcats all suffer MAC losses

ST. HENRY — A cold-shooting third quarter by the New Knoxville boys basketball team allowed  St. Henry to wrest control away from the Rangers in a 59-49 Midwest Athletic Conference win.

St. Henry outscored the Rangers 15-6 in the third, as the Rangers went 2 of 14 from the floor.

Runners see new area race

CELINA — Area runners can look forward to a new run Sept. 27, an event organizers hope will improve the local economy and Grand Lake St. Marys’ reputation.

At a press conference announcing the event, organizer Roger Bowersock expressed his excitement for the marathon runners can use to qualify for the Boston marathon.

Bowersock, owner of Rocketship Sports out of Greenville, said he has thought about bringing such an event to the Grand Lake region for many years.
