NEW BREMEN — The annual rivalry game between New Bremen and Minster didn’t disappoint on Friday. The 155th meeting  had to go to overtime and it took a basket by Brent Goettemoeller and a free throw by Carson Manger to give the New Bremen Cardinals a 55-52 victory.

Heartfelt Fund Collects Thousands From Book Sales

ST. MARYS — The Heartfelt Fund, established to support victims of Hyptrophic Cardio Myopathy (HCM), just passed $11,000 in book sales, selling more than 500 books written about St. Marys.

“We’re pretty pleased so far,” Buz Howard said of the book "The St. Marys Anthology: Tales and Sketches From An American Small Town."

The book, which costs $22, is organized chronologically as a series of tales and sketches of St. Marys.

New Knoxville closed with 21-0 run to knock off DSJ

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville girls basketball team went to the half down a point and ended up with a runaway win. A 21-0 run to end the game will do that.

The Rangers scored all 19 points in the fourth quarter in a 59-34 Midwest Athletic Conference victory over Delphos St. John’s at The Barn on Thursday night.

New Knoxville’s turned up the defense in the second half, causing eight turnovers and Paige Lehman and Haley Horstman combined for 22 second-half points.

Dave "Salty" Horner, 71

January 17, 2014

Dave "Salty" Horner, 71, of 535 S. Chestnut St., Van Wert, died at 11:55  p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born on May 11, 1942, in Indianapolis, Ind., to parents Ward L. and Mary K. (Caldwell) Horner, both of whom preceded him in death.

Thomas A. Broyles, 72

January 17, 2014

Thomas A. Broyles, 72, of Ottawa, and Wildwood, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014. Tom was born in St. Marys, the son of Warren and Virginia (Fischer) Broyles. Both sides of his family came from Germany.

Tom began his pharmacy career in 1957, working in a local pharmacy in St. Marys.

Tom Browning, Reds HOF in New Bremen on Jan. 19

The New Bremen Athletic Boosters will be holding their 2nd Annual Reds Event featuring Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer and the only Reds player to pitch a perfect game, Tom Browning on Sunday, Jan. 19 at the New Bremen American Legion.

Joining Tom will be representatives from the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and their traveling display of Cincinnati Reds memorabilia with emphasis on the 1990 Championship Team.

Doug Frye: 'This is home'

ST. MARYS — Doug Frye will try to rebuild the St. Marys football program — the one he carefully tended for 11 seasons and the one he watched fall into disrepair in the five seasons since he left and coached at rival Wapakoneta.

Frye was officially named head coach of the Roughriders at a St. Marys Board of Education meeting on Wednesday night.
