ST. MARYS — Fire crews from two local departments helped battle a garage fire on Oliver Street Sunday night.
The St. Marys Fire Department received a phone call at 7:58 p.m. Sunday reporting a garage fire at 809 Oliver St. When crews arrived, the garage was engulfed in flames and threatened to spread to the main structure.
FOSTORIA — The St. Marys track team is sending four more individuals to the regional meet after strong performances in the Division II district meet at Fostoria on Friday evening.
After the St. Marys girls 3200 meter relay team punched its ticket for Lexington earlier in the week, four Rider individuals placed in the top four on Friday to advance.
ST. MARYS — Former Ohio State forward J.J. Sullinger recently could be seen sporting a St. Marys Tailgate for Cancer t-shirt around Columbus, a place where for three generations his family has become a sort of First Family of basketball.
The connection the former Ohio State basketball player made with some Memorial High School grads on a Buckeye-themed cruise will bring Sullinger and some friends to St. Marys this summer.
ST. MARYS — After completing coursework a semester early to go to boot camp last February, senior Priscilla Dodson will return on Sunday to walk in commencement with her graduating class at Memorial High School, but set apart, in her dress blues, as a Marine.
It’s not the first time Dodson will feel different from her classmates.
Marcille A. Sailor, 86, of Jackson Center, died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Miami Valley Medical Center, Dayton.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1926, in Shelby County, the daughter of George F. and Matilda Kempfer Wildermuth, who preceded her in death.
Harold E. Hesse, 89, of Spencerville, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Van Wert Community Hospice Center, with his son and daughter at his side.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1923, in Mendon, the son of Ralph Ernest and Ethel Mae Shank Hesse, who preceded him in death.
He had been married to Verna M. Rasberry, who survives in St. Marys. On April 23, 1977, he married Vivian Kay Grear, who died on June 24, 2008.
Kurt Eldon Piper, 73, of Neptune, passed away peacefully at 5:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on June 23, 1939, in Neptune, the son of Lowell “Bud” and Ada (Martin) Piper, both of whom preceded him in death.
On May 27, 1961, he married Amelia Sue Hertenstein; she preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1997.
CELINA — The man charged in the shooting death of a Rockford woman last year has pleaded guilty to the charge.
In a plea agreement reached on Friday, Daniel C. Martin pleaded guilty to murder, with a gun specification, in the death of Melinda S. Shinn. Martin shot and killed Shinn at 509 North St., Rockford, on Nov. 8.
Martin now faces 15 years to life in prison with an additional three years because of the gun specification. Martin is scheduled to be sentenced at 9 a.m. June 27.

CELINA — An arrest has been made in connection with the break-in of a Mercer County Sheriff's car earlier this week.
In a news release, Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reported his office is in the process of updating policies on firearms that are stored in office vehicles. The sheriff’s office does not disclose the types of weapons deputies have at their disposal as it is a risk to deputies for criminals to know what resources are available and what resources are not available.
