Brooks Snags Sweepstakes Title

WAPAKONETA — The fourth time was the charm for St. Marys native Cole Brooks as he took home the showmanship sweepstakes title Thursday night at the Auglaize County Fair.

“It feels great,” Brooks, 18, said shortly after being named the winner of Thursday’s event that pitted the best of the best against each other. “I was hoping I was going to win. I’ve done this four times so I was hoping I would win.”

Flowers Bloom At Fair

ST. MARYS — Food and flowers filled the fruit hall at the Auglaize County Fair Wednesday evening during the Floral Show and Baking Contest.

Nervous chefs surrounded the judge where Pat Wooley stood behind a U-shaped counter, taste-testing the various salsas and appetizers that composed this years’ entries.

'Hare' Raising Fun At Fair

WAPAKONETA — Judges chose winners in the rabbit showmanship on Tuesday, looking at how well the showmen have taken care of and studied their rabbits.

Terry Fander, a rabbit judge, said judges look at breeds and body types in other categories, but showmanship is mostly based on the ability to handle and maintain control of the animal, along with what the competitor knows about the breed.

Kenneth J. Kramer, 69

Kenneth J. Kramer, 69, of rural Wapakoneta, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at his family farm.

He was born on May 24, 1944, in Sidney, the son of the late John and Emma (Lindhaus) Kramer. He was a graduate of Botkins High School, and served with the U.S. Army in Germany and the United States. On Sept. 4, 1965, he married Nancy K. Kritesin of Wapakoneta. His wife of 48 years survives on the family farm near Wapakoneta.  

James P. Geis, 64

James P. Geis, 64, of 16550 Buckland River Road, Wapakoneta, died at 7:35 p.m. Monday, July 29, 2013, at his residence, following a nearly two-year battle with cancer.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1948, in Sidney, the son of Bernard and Cleopha (Nuss) Geis.

He married Debora Potbury on June 27, 1975, and she survives at the residence.

He is also survived by his three children, Laura (Ryan) Brandt of St. Marys, Daniel (Crystal) Geis of Winfield, Miss.; Scott Geis of Wapakoneta; by three grandchildren, Seth, Aleah and Hannah Brandt.

Committee Examines Budget

ST. MARYS — Thanks in part to lower-than-anticipated bids for the asbestos abatement at the former power plant, the city’s coffers should be a little healthier.

During Monday night’s St. Marys Finance Committee meeting, Safety-Service Director Greg Foxhoven said bids for the project, which were submitted on Thursday, came in less than the $900,000 councilors appropriated for the project. A total of seven bidders submitted proposals, with the lowest bid coming in at $272,000. The highest came in at more than $750,000.

Lucille S. Henke, 94

July 29, 2013

Lucille S. Henke, 94, of New Bremen, died at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the Otterbein of St. Marys.  

She was born on April 14, 1919, in New Bremen.  

She was the daughter of Emil and Adeline (Koeper) Poppe.  

On July 5, 1941, she married Frederick L. Henke who died on Feb. 11, 1989.  

She was the last of her family, preceded in death by her three brothers, Wilfred, Alfred and John Poppe.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Charlene Ann Hess, 75

Charlene Ann Hess, 75, of 11535 Eilerman Road, Minster, passed away at 3:55 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Auglaize Acres Nursing Home in Wapakoneta. She was born on May 30, 1938, in Piqua, the daughter of the late Cecil Koontz and Mildred (Howett) Shroyer. She was married to Thomas Robbins who preceded her in death in Nov. of 2010.

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Overman, 80, of 1495 State Route 716 Maria Stein, died at 8:40 a.m.  Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Briarwood Village, Coldwater.

She was born on May 3, 1933, in Osgood, to the late Joseph R. and Cecilia E. (Bruening) Frey.
