Pilot Project Gets Green Light

CELINA — A pilot aeration study has been approved for Grand Lake St. Marys to use solar powered aeration equipment in two locations, with the goal of potentially lowering Celina’s water toxicity before water treatment and opening Second Beach at St. Marys.

Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration Commission Manager Milt Miller made the announcement during Saturday’s Lake Improvement Association meeting. Miller has long touted the need for increased aeration in the lake as a way to improve its water quality.

BOYS HOOPS: St. Marys, Celina fall to WBL co-champs in sectional finals

LIMA — The St. Marys boys basketball team went basket for basket with Bath for a quarter, but the Wildcats’ relentless defensive pressure and array of offensive weapons proved to be too much.

Bath pulled away from St. Marys behind junior Taren Sullivan’s 25-point night for a 76-52 sectional final victory on Friday night at Lima Senior to end the Roughriders’ season.

BOYS HOOPS: New Bremen wins sectional title, Rangers bow out

COLDWATER – The odds were against the New Bremen Cardinals basketball team Friday night in the Division IV sectional championship at the Palace in Coldwater. They were without their head coach Adam Dougherty, who was sitting out the second game of his suspension from being ejected from the Delphos St. John’s game two weeks ago, and they had a 13-day layoff since their last game.

The Cardinals didn’t let the obstacles get in their way as they used a big third quarter run to defeat the Marion Local Flyers 53-45 for the sectional title.

“Leader Look Back” is a collection of stories and headlines from 75, 50 and 25 years ago this week. This week’s edition examines stories from Feb. 26 to March 4, 1938, 1963 and 1988.

75 years ago: Cridersville won the Auglaize County Class B Tournament title by defeating Buckland 39-36.

Two St. Marys residents were fined $25 for stealing from Nickel Plate Railway.

The St. Marys Roughriders were eliminated from tournament play in a 29-11 loss to Lima South.

Rider Values Passion, Cooperation

ST. MARYS — Memorial High School senior Chelsea Yahl, 18, loves being involved and being outside — she devotes her time to the things she loves to do, including FFA, band, track, softball, and 4-H.

For Yahl, being in FFA, which she has been in since her freshman year, is about being a team and working together with her fellow FFA members to accomplish their goals.

Kuffner Leaves Mark On Community

ST. MARYS — Local volunteer, attorney and community advocate Jack Kuffner died Thursday, leaving behind family, fellow parishoners, Kiwanis and colleagues with memories of the ways he impacted the St. Marys community.

As a lawyer, local attorney Kraig Noble said that Kuffner was highly respected in the local law community. As an assistant prosecutor, prosecutor and judge in the county court, Noble said he had high standards.

Bernard Sampson, 86

Bernard Sampson, 86, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Emerald Crossings.

He was born on Jan. 12, 1927, to the late James and Matilda Sampson in Lima. Bernard was a fun-loving family man and outdoorsman with a passion for the Buckeyes and Roughriders, and an appreciation of good food and travel. He was a long-time member of St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Bernard was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann Sampson.

Diane M. Otting, 57

March 1, 2013

Diane M. Otting, 57, of 8427 Ohio 119, Maria Stein, died on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Community Hospital in Coldwater. She had been ill for 24 days.

She was born on May 21, 1955, in Coldwater to the late Harold and Delores (Mescher) Quinter Schwieterman. Delores survives in Maria Stein.

William J. Meyer, 63

March 1, 2013

William (Bill) Joseph Meyer, 63, of Visalia, Calif., formerly of Minster, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on May 9, 1949, in Piqua, to Dr. and Mrs. Roman L. Meyer of Coldwater.

He was a 1967 Graduate of Coldwater High School, a 1971 Graduate of Wright State University in Dayton, with a B.S. in Education and a 1980 Graduate of Wright State University in Dayton, with a Master of Education.

John F. Kuffner, 84

March 1, 2013

John F. “Jack” Kuffner, 84, of St. Marys, died on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at his residence.

He was born on March 23, 1928, in Washington D.C., the son of Fred and Dr. Elizabeth (Yahl) Kuffner.

He married Alma Shaw on July 26, 1953, and she survives at the residence.
