Horstman hits 1,000 points, Ranger offense breaks out with 76-25 win

NEW KNOXVILLE — One of the most decorated players in Midwest Athletic Conference girls basketball history added another accomplishment to her growing list.

Needing one more basket to reach 1,000 points for her career and time running out on the first half, New Knoxville senior Haley Horstman juked at the top of the key to create an abundance of space, sliced into the lane and canned a 10-foot runner to reach the millenium mark in New Knoxville’s 76-25 win over Spencerville.

Teens/tweens can make a votive holder from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. today at the Stallo Memorial Library.

Adult Services Coordinator Andrea Burton and Youth Services Coordinator Karie Enneking will offer a family DIY Christmas gift event at the New Bremen Library at 6 p.m. today. We will be making a holiday craft. Kids 4 and up can bring a picture of themselves to make a personalized ornament. Stop by the library or call 419-629-2158 to register.

Alleged Robber Enters Plea

December 17, 2013

CELINA — The suspect believed to be responsible for robbing a Celina bank in November asserted his innocence on Monday.

Cody Maxwell, 22, pleaded innocent to one count each of robbery and theft during an arraignment hearing in Mercer County Common Pleas Court. Maxwell, who is being held on a $750,000 bond with a 10 percent cash provision, is being held in the Mercer County Jail as his case proceeds through the court system. Maxwell was ordered to appear for a pretrial hearing at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 8.

Wapak earns first win for Selvey against Minster

December 16, 2013

WAPAKONETA — After giving up the lead briefly to start the second half, the Wapakoneta Redskins quickly rebounded and closed out the Minster Wildcats in a tight ball game Saturday, giving first-year coach Doug Selvey his first win with the Redskins.

After leading virtually the entire first half, Wapak quickly regained the lead and held onto it the rest of the game in a 53-48 victory Saturday over Minster in the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

Walter A. Strayer, 89

December 16, 2013

Walter A. Strayer, 89, of New Knoxville, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.

Born on Jan. 3, 1924, in Shelby County, Mr. Strayer was the son of Edgar and Loverna (Earhart) Strayer.

He married Norma Mae Partington on June 10, 1948, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1999.

Together, they raised five children, Mary Ann Pence of Houston, Carol (Bruce) Cron of Fletcher, Cheryl (Kenneth) Carr of Sidney, Alan (Kristi) Strayer of Arcanum and Janice (Larry) Gockley, of Sidney.
