Werner G. “Bern” Schwartz, 58, of New Bremen, died at 11:35 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at his sister’s residence near St. Marys.  

Werner was born in St. Marys on May 11, 1954, to the late Louis C. and Rita B. (Dues) Schwartz.

Mary C. Moeller, 82

Mary C. Moeller, 82, of Celina, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Celina Manor, of natural causes.

She was born on March 30, 1930, in Sharpsburg, to parents Edward and Louisa Muhlenkamp Feltz, both of whom preceded her in death.

On June 2, 1948, she married Louis Moeller, who preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1996.

NEW BREMEN — If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then the lavaliere, a necklace with fraternity letters, is the friendly neighbor you want to know better.

The necklace, a 1930s college precursor to the modern promise ring, is at the center of the new play “Ode to Lavaliere,” which is being performed at 7 p.m. today and at 7 p.m. Saturday at New Bremen High School.

Director and playwright Dan Keyes characterized the play as a romantic comedy set on a college campus that was written with each student in mind for his or her part.

Kathleen Sue "Kathy" Shirk, 60

Kathleen Sue "Kathy" Shirk, 60, Celina, died on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Van Wert County Hospital.

She was born on May 5, 1952.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Kelly; mother, Ruth Ketrow Kelly Schnack; and stepfather, John Schnack.

She married Dennis Shirk on Oct. 2, 1971, and he preceded her in death on July 29, 1994.

Surviving are a daughter, Amanda (Charlie) Stucke; a son, Willis (Joanie) Shirk, five grandchildren; and her father-in-law, Robert Shirk, all of Celina; and a brother.

Ethan Grant Rife, 4

Ethan Grant Rife,  4, of Washington Township, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at his home.

He was born on Nov. 1, 2008, in Kettering.

Ethan was baptized at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and was a member of the Church of the Incarnation.

He enjoyed watching Mickey Mouse, playing with cars and reading "The Hungry Little Caterpillar."

12 Arrested In Drug Sweep

CELINA — A dozen people were recently indicted stemming from an investigation conducted by the Grand Lake Task Force.

The 12 suspect each face a variety of drug-related charges. The charges allegedly involved include the sale of heroin and marijuana to several suspects who faces charges for allegedly possessing the ingredients to make meth.

NEW KNOXVILLE — The togas are the same, but this isn’t your high school mythology class.

“The Iliad, The Odyssey, and All of Greek Mythology in 99 Minutes or Less,” opening  at 7 p.m. Friday at New Knoxville School is an irreverent take on the gods, goddesses and heroes set down by Homer.

This is the debut New Knoxville production for director Vickie Shurelds, who compared the show to work done by British comedy troupe Monty Python. In a dress rehearsal Wednesday, she tweaked blocking and the students’ acting on the show.

Opal Hunter, 79

Opal Hunter, 79, of 404 E. South St., Botkins, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at her residence.

She was born on July 28, 1933, in War Branch, Ky., the daughter of McKinley and Alice (Caldwell) Napier.

On Nov. 17, 1951, she married Chester Hunter, who died on July 17, 1996.

She is survived by four daughters, Jewel Wehner of New Knoxville, Patty (Dave) Opperman of Wapakoneta, Pamela (Willis) Rehn of Botkins, Kimberly (Terry) Withrow of Wapakoneta; a son, James (Pam) Hunter of Wapakoneta; four sisters; one brother.

Evon E. Schlenker, 93

Lifelong Wapakoneta resident Evon E. Schlenker, 93, died on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on Dec. 5, 1919, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Albert and Freda (Hengstler) Knatz.  

On Aug. 5, 1939, she married John H. Schlenker, and he preceded her in death on May 15, 2002.

Moore leaves Minster for La Salle

Nate Moore's run as head football coach at Minster High School was short but sweet. It ended when Moore accepted the head coaching  position at Cincinnati La Salle High School on Tuesday night.

Moore is the ninth head coach in La Salle history, according to a La Salle press release.
