CELINA — In an effort to increase aeration in Grand Lake St. Marys, the Lake Improvement Association will be offering financial assistance to homeowners who want to participate in a new project.
The program will offer a maximum of $500 each for up to 20 projects this year. The money will help defray the costs of aeration systems homeowners can purchase to increase circulation in dead-end channels along Grand Lake St. Marys.

OTTAWA — St. Marys head tennis coach Brice Brenneman came into Friday night’s Western Buckeye League tennis opener feeling the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans were the league team most even with his team’s skillset this spring.
The two teams played a close match, with O-G pulling out a 3-2 victory over St. Marys.
“Ottawa is a good team,” Brenneman said. “It would’ve been nice to pull this one out, but the effort was good and I see us getting better at a couple positions.”
CELINA — The New Bremen baseball team had its chances as Celina pitchers walked 11 batters, but six Cardinal errors allowed the Bulldogs to stay undefeated with a 10-2 victory over the Cardinals at Montgomery Field on Friday.
“We walked a lot and left a lot of batters on,” Cardinals head coach Josh Bowersock said. “We also got picked off a lot. We had errors, we got picked off and we lose the ballgame. When you look at the errors and the times we got picked off and that was the basis of the game.”
ST. MARYS — Coldwater’s sophomores have made quite an impression on head baseball coach Brian Harlamert early in the season. Friday night was no different.
Coldwater sophomore back-up catcher Blake Spangler had a key two-run pinch hit single that opened the floodgates for the Coldwater offense while sophomore pitcher Greg Gilliland tossed five one-hit, shutout innings to lead the Cavaliers to an 11-0 win over the Roughriders on Friday night at K.C. Geiger Park.

ST. MARYS — Memorial High School freshman Alexis Sutton loves learning.
Her eyes light up when she talks about school and anything academic-related, so it’s no surprise that she excels in these areas. She is proud of her 4.0. During study hall, she tries to motivate her friends to do their homework when their response is, “Oh, I’ll do it later.”
ST. MARYS — Though St. Marys residents may know Garet Fledderjohann for his skills on the Roughrider basketball court, the 18-year-old has drive and passion for more than sports.
Fledderjohann is active in the Memorial High School chapter of DECA. The program has given him invaluable experience in an area he hopes to pursue as a career. The past two years he has competed in the DECA state competitions, where he has done well.
One year, he presented a case study to judges as part of a team, but he found that he works better by himself.
