CELINA — Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announced two arrests this morning in the double homicide of Robert Grube, 70, and daughter Colleen Grube, 47, of east Fort Recovery, after a 16 month investigation.
ST. MARYS — Organizers of a local park improvement day are looking for volunteers to help add manpower to their roster.
The St. Marys National Little League will be hosting a park improvement day at K.C. Geiger Park at 9 a.m. April 6. The goal of the project is to help spruce up K.C. Geiger Park for the upcoming season.
“We are asking for help from the community on this,” said Brian Engle, an organizer of the event. “Everyone has worked together.”
ST. MARYS — After edging up to start the year, the unemployment rate for Auglaize County in February decreased.
In data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Auglaize County registered an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent, down from 6.2 percent in January. Last year, the unemployment rate sat at 6.8 percent.
NEW BREMEN — At the beginning of the new year, the village of New Bremen saw a change in ownership in one of its dental offices.
Elsie J. (Vonderheide) Winner, 75, of Celina, died on Monday, March 25, 2013.
She was born on Oct. 4, 1937, in Fort Loramie, to the late Albert and Rose Vonderheide.
She married Donald A. Winner on June 24, 1961, and he preceded her death, along with three brothers and five sisters.
She is survived by five children, Diane (Cliff) Cerbus, Deborah (Bob) Glass, David (Amy) Winner, Dan Winner and Dean (Crista) Winner; 10 grandchildren; and two sisters.
Dallas E. Pierstorff, 83, of Celina, died on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater.
He was born on Aug. 12, 1929, in Celina, to the late Edward E. and Hazel L. (Fast) Pierstorff.
He married Kathryn "Kitty" Gengler on Nov. 4, 1951, and she survives, along with three children, Diane (Barry) Fennig of Celina, Rebekah Pierstorff Snead of St. Augustine, Fla. and Eric (Jodi) Pierstorff of Celina; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law.
Opal L. Barber, 91, of Celina, died on Sunday, March 24, 2013 , at The Laurels of Shane Hill, Rockford.
She was born on July 28, 1921, in Mercer County, to the late Earl and Edith (Deitsch) VanTilburg.
She married John C. Barber on Nov. 21, 1939, and he preceded her in death on May 21, 1998.
She is survived by three children, Don Barber of Mendon, Va., (Robert) Hoenie of Del Rio, Texas and Marilyn Hoenie of Celina; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Jerry D. Piper, 60, of Celina, died at 12:37 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, at Mercer Health in Coldwater, of natural causes.
He was born on May 21, 1952, in Celina, to parents Dana Piper, who survives in Celina, and Mary Cisco Piper, who preceded him in death.
On Sept. 2, 1972, he married Linda Hime, who survives in Celina.
Also surviving is a son, Brad and Jacci Piper of Celina; a daughter, Cari and Avery Calabrese of Celina; three brothers; a sister; two grandchildren.
Paulette A. McJunkin, 85, of Troy, and formerly of St. Marys, passed away at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Auglaize Acres in Wapakoneta.
She was born on Oct. 3, 1927, in Rochefort, Belgium, to the late Eugene and Maria Pemers Collin.
She was married to John R. McJunkin Jr., on Nov. 30, 1946, and he preceded her in death on July 8, 1979.
Also preceding her in death was one sister.
NEW BREMEN — The Ohio Chapter of The Wheelmen hosted its annual swap and memorabilia meet at the Bicycle Museum of America on Saturday, selling rims, prints, medals and more.
Artisan Mark Weaver wheeled in a new exhibit, a custom, handcrafted bicycle he made himself in Collingswood, N.J., in his shop at Weaver Cycle Works. The bike is part of an exhibit about bicycles that are made in America open now at the museum in New Bremen.
